How Taco Bell Started
Показать описание
Glen Bell was a retired marine when he came home to San Bernardino, California, in 1946.
There, he wanted to go into the food business, so he opened a hot dog stand called Bell’s Drive-in.
After his second hot dog and burger stand started to compete with the booming McDonalds (who opened its third store in San Bernardino), Bell wanted to expand his horizons.
Apparently, Bell was curious about the popularity of Mitla Café, a restaurant located just across the street from him that was selling tacos and other Mexican items.
San Bernardino locals loved their hard-shelled tacos, and Bell started going there to try and reverse-engineer the recipe.
Eventually the owners of the Café let him in the kitchen to watch the tacos being prepared, and in 1952 he started selling tacos through a side window in his hot dog stand.
Soon enough, tacos were a bigger seller than hot dogs, so he started Taco Tia, food stands selling mainly Mexican food.
After managing several franchises of El tacos, as well as Taco Tia, he sold everything and in 1962 the first Taco Bell was born in Downey, California.
The first franchise opened in Torrance in 1964, and by 1967, the business was opening its 100th store in Anaheim, California.
With the growing success of the model, Pepsi tried to compete with their Taco Kid, a restaurant started under Pizza Hut. After the idea crashed and burned, they decided to buy TacoBell and in 1978 they sold to Pepsico.
The booming growth hasn’t stopped. As of 2019, Taco Bell boasts 7,000+ locations in 27 countries around the world.
Interestingly enough, TacoBell hasn’t managed to get into the Mexican market. Apparently Mexicans aren’t keen on the American-version of their staple food.
Today, Taco Bell is a subsidiary of Yum! Brands Inc., owned by PepsiCo. Yum! also franchises KFC and Pizza Hut. Yum! is valued at $34.4 billion dollars.
