Pruning blackberries once the season is over is incredibly easy!

Step 1) ID the two types of canes.

First year canes are canes that grew while your second year canes were busy making fruit.

Second year canes fruited in the previous season and won’t fruit again. You’ll want to prune all of these back to the base.

I personally like pruning our blackberries back in November / December and it makes it really easy to tell which canes fruited when.

Second year canes will be a brown color and look ✨dead✨

First year canes will be green in comparison and you’ll want to leave these heathy canes!

Step 2) cut the second year canes all the way to the base.

We’ll come back in spring for part 2 and prune the tips to promote branching ✂️
