I thought the girl was going through a mental episode and the guy was trying to pull her out of it. Damn.

I've always interpreted this song to be about a depressed partner who is struggling through their mental health while their partner stays by their side to guide them out. The true meaning is beautiful and tragic, but i don't think how i think of the song will change much. The meaning i gave it is close to heart currently, and i hope the true meaning can be put off for many years to come.

As a widow myself, it probably would have been comforting to know this as I listened so often…. Maybe my soul knew… because this is one of my favorite songs.

I always interpreted this song as a couple dealing with one of them having dementia

PLEASE 1. Do a full version and 2. Talk more about of Monsters and Men!! I’d love to hear what you have to say about some of the other ones and what their meanings are!

This song is so underrated, too many people don't know what the lyrics are about, I'm glad this short can let more people know this ❤

The first time I heard this song as a little kid it gave me my love for music, I heard it on a pop station and it stuck out so much compared to everything else they played and I fell in love with it. Now many years later I am terminally ill and it’s one of the songs that still sticks with me the most, I know soon that my partner will be alone and it fills me with so much grief, as i have aged I’ve grown to appreciate this song more and more and I am grateful to the people who created it and incredibly empathetic of the grief they endured that caused them to write it.

This song came out around when my father had passed away so I already understood the meaning of the song. The other interpretation of this song I take is a relationship on its last leg when the ship either sinks or they find a way to keep going.

I’ve loved this song for so long specifically because of the lyrics/what they mean. I'm glad you did a cover to help others learn about it!

It could even be twisted into a song about loosing someone (like a child ) and it quickly turns into a song about grieving and supporting though a tough time

I did it as a karaoke duet with a friend of mine shortly after it came out. That very much changed how I viewed that song.

I don't know why this hit me so hard but I see what the grief of losing my dad is doing to my mom and I can just hear him saying all those things to her to make her more comfortable

This song was one i listened to when my dad died, and i was always confused why it comforted me so much because it was so upbeat, but now i know.

Please make a full version it sounds so good!!

Your voice is so beautiful and you did such a killer job with that song... I really hope you get an album out. I'd cry a LOT to you singing.

It’s only implied that one of the partners is deceased. They said that it’s about two people talking past each other and that “maybe one person isn’t really hearing the other one”. People have taken that to mean that the wife isn’t listening to the deceased husband, but I interpret it as the husband brushing off his wife’s concerns, especially the line where she says “some days I don’t know if I am wrong or right” and he just goes “your mind is playing tricks on you my dear”, like that isn’t the most condescending thing to say to that.

Anyways, I’m writing a book called Sunshowers based on this song, where the husband believes his wife is possessed and takes her on a cruise (like an old fashioned “your crazy wife just needs sea air” remedy), but it turns out that she is possessed… by his own conscience, which is trying to force him to wake up to reality, rather than completely locking himself away in daydreams, to the point that he believes them to be real. His wife has left him for being abusive, and at the end of the story, he comes to terms with that. The first chapter has the wife mentioning how much she dislikes their new home, that it’s “old and empty”, and he says that it won’t be empty when they get their things moved in, so let’s hurry up. At the end of the story, we see that it’s him living in an old and empty house. Full of his things, but he’s there alone after driving away everyone who had ever loved him.
