Silent Hill 2 was inspired by Jacob's Ladder

It was inspired by Jacob's Ladder. First with James' clothing which was also in the movie as well as the prisoner head twitching which you can see in most enemy types in the game. Jack the ripper seems to be a bit of a stretch since Maria's name was a reference to a translation in english as Mary, noting that Mary and Maria are same as much as they are disimillar in aspects to confuse James' mind. Hence the portrayal shown in the game when you first meet her.

James' motivation aren't really anything like Raskolnikov's in Crime and Punishment. Raskolnikov wanted to prove to himself that he is above the law and that morality only applies to the many, not exceptional individuals like himself. Very different from James.

Literally misinformation. Sh2 was based on the book crime and punishment while the series as a whole was inspired by Jacob’s ladder

Everyone claiming he's wrong and saying over and over that "Silent Hill is based on Jacob's Ladder"...all it takes is research and you will see he's right. In the original script for Silent Hill 2, James had an alter ego named "Joseph" who killed Mary. The other characters(minus Laura) also had doubles and duality was a heavy theme early on. It's why we have scenes of James staring at his reflection in the mirror and in the save screen. Angela staring in the mirror. The player able to walk around in the room with the giant mirror even though the scene is over(same with bathroom in the beginning). This idea was scrapped very early and only Mary's double(Maria) was kept and expanded on. Elements of this idea are also still present in the memos of Brookhaven Hospital.

Wrong! Its based on the story book Crimes and Punishment. It's the same conclusion. Other inspirations from other media were added like Jacobs ladder.
