If I recall correctly, she attempted a murder-suicide, trying to gas both herself AND Travis. She breaths poison gas, referencing her attempt at taking herself and Travis out by gas inhalation. That same incident also caused him to develop asthma.

For a bit more context on gibbets and gibbeting (gibbeting is the action of having criminals in a gibbet): Gibbets were used to display criminals who committed crimes, they were usually hung before being put in the gibbet, and they were left to rot in there, usually as a deterrent to would-be criminals, they were also done to pirates in a different way. Gibbeted pirates were left at the coast, to be displayed to other pirates so they would see what happens if they go there
