What is your choice? Tech Role or Management Role and Why?

There is nothing like management role and there are very few left. There are oldies who are already holding that chair and do not want budge for the new people to take over then what choice do you have even when you have amazing people management skills. You end in a technical role with management skills and you already know the result.

These days, the demand for techno managers is more than ever. People-only management days are gone. A technical person organically growing into a manager is the safest thing to do as per my experience.

Never been able to understand how a non technical manager can manage technical people, appraises their work and decides who deserves promotion!!!!

Thank you for yet another wonderful video.
I think you should have also shed some light on parameters like work-life balance and income.
As per my understanding,
in the early and mid-career stages, techies earn more, but eventually, managers catch up with them.
While work-life balance is generally better on the management side.

For IT services companies and support projects, aim of being service delivery manager after 40 which is a combination of technical, process and client facing management role . For development projects, aim for technical project manager role because TPM is a combination of architect and manager and who can take both technical and project management decisions.

One suggestion, before going to any conclusion for any role..both options will open after 10+yrs exp..then lets take taste of other role for small duration around 1 year and see, are you fit into that..and then decide..if not suitable other options is always open...these roles are working differently in every organisation or expectations may also vary...best of luck.

I love technical and like you've described I'm more of a technical person but without much technical expertise/knowledge for my age in 30s. I don't know how to grow/survive in this world.

Interest doesnt matter for employers. In my professional life I have never been hired for my strengths or interests but what is market demand. That is what matters. Satisfaction is secondary

I have spent 12 years in IT infrastructure support and I love technical role. In Technical support, it's not mandatory to be coding expert. There are lot of things like installation, configuration management, automation, security, etc.

Hi,
Curious to know why is that technical people may have to put in extra hours?
Moreover as per my experience at some point even if you are in a technical role you have to attend meetings throughout the day just like any managerial role. The only difference is that you have to attend the meeting with architects from other teams. But there also your job is to collaborate with them to identify a feasible solution. Hence, being a good speaker, negotiator or collaborator pays off even if you are a technical person.

It's common believe that technical roles provides more job safety rather than management roles. Please share your views on this..

After 40, you have other liabilities. Technical role requires more time, energy and strength which you won't be having at that time. Your juniors will perform better than you. Eventually you will get demoralized. So, don't continue in technical line after 40.

How do you perceive techno-managerial roles - are they jack of all trades with no clear career path or they can become industry experts with enough experience in their field? How does one get such a role at their company and ensure the career growth always continues?
