One tip I picked up a couple years ago is to do a couple practice casts to get your distance. After a cast pull another 10 feet or so off the spool and then cover the spool with a piece of electrical tape. The tape is long enough to cover the spool but not overlap. Reel your line in covering the tape. When you get a bird’s nest it won’t go deeper than your electrical tape and is amazingly easy to clear. Since then I’ve done that on all my bait casters. I don’t birds nest the spool very often anymore but when it does it’s minimal and so easy to clear. Hope this idea will helps others.

At 66 years old i finally bought a Catfish Special and learned to use a baitcaster. Works great, several hours in the yard practicing with a socket. I have not had a single birds nest while fishing the Arkansas river with a Carolina rig with a 3 ounce flat sinker.

My first cast on my new baitcaster resulted in the most narlly rats nest ever. Thanks for explaining what went wrong and how to fix it. Great video.

Idk about you guys but I'd much rather cast 10 times (to tune) with the brake and spool tension too tight than that first loose cast and nest it instantly.
Sometimes that single bad cast can ruin your entire day out. I carry 3 to 5 rods and I've nested all of em in a 2 hour span! Bad day without a doubt! This guy has it figured out. Thanks for the video! Insanely helpful.

I have an older baitcasting reel that I always struggled to use without getting a backlash. I bought the same reel you were using in this video and followed your instructions for setting it up and bingo ... works like a charm! I am amazed! Thank you so much for this video!

The reason manufactures set the drags to their lowest setting is to avoid getting flat spots on your drag washers. The flat spots are what causes your drag to be jerky. So always turn your drags to zero when storing.

Hey Tyler! I'm a freshman in high school and I love fishing. I'm on the deer park high school fishing team in Houston. We fish at rayburn and Toledo bend. We fish against 500+ teams in our region (SETX). Its my dream to go to SFA, A&M, or Sam Houston and fish for college. I want to thank you for inspiring me to be a better angler. Thank you for everything you do for us. You are my favorite youtuber and I've commented on alot of videos in the past. Good luck in the future! P.S. the fluke train video was incredible!

Just one other tip in casting... I remember Roland Martin saying that is important to 'load up the rod tip' when you're casting as well, and it's just a little bit easier with a fast action rod.
When you're casting and you load the rod tip, you're creating tension between the lure and the spool, and when you release, the lure will travel the same speed as spool due to the tension.

Thank you so much for this video! I'm a "learning angler, " and have wanted to use a baitcaster more. It's been very intimidating and, frankly, frustrating! This video made a WORLD of difference to me, and I am happy to say I caught my pb - 4.4lbs, 19" on my caster! I love all the videos, but this one has made a huge difference in my game!

Great info! My Dad taught me all this back in the 70's on the original Lew's Speed Spool. We loved those reels. We literally wore them out. They developed a gap between the spool and the body of the reel and the line would get in there and snap. I still have those reels. Great keepsakes. Great memories!

Just wanted to say thank you I started fishing this summer and quickly advance from push button to spinning reel and bought my first baitcaster I got a backlash the first time I tried to use it had to put a new line tried it and backlashes it made me loose interest and selfed it and used my catfish rod I watch a video of another YouTuber buying and using a bait caster and kept his catches and his flaws which inspired me and watched your video after that which brought back the spark to use my bait caster I took my baitcaster and did what you taught and it worked I did get to backlashes but it didn’t stop me right now I can confidently say I’m comfortable using my baitcaster and have no backlashes thank you you are really making a difference don’t care what people say you not but I’m a testimony to the fact

A lot of my fixes came from watching Bill Dance from many years ago. Before YouTube was a thought. Your demonstrations are very well done. Tight lines.

How many of us remember the Intrepid Sea Streak bait caster of the 1960’s ? Nothing like todays technology but still used a centrifugal magnets system to control line leaving the spool. Great video by the way 👍

Nice. I have a Lew's Crush baitcaster on my wish list. I have no worries about using it now. Always use spinning only
