Madness were so huge - they were FUN! This represents children growing up in a working class background in the UK back then. The innocence, the fun, the people. And you didn't need to be rich money wise - you were rich family and with family values wise.

My dad was a depressed, hardened, combat veteran who rarely laughed or showed much emotion. So, you can imagine how bizarre and funny it was to be a teenager and hear him in another part of “our house” singing this song, lol.

As a British working class lad aged 11 when this came out, I could instantly identify with it. I think what it shows is how culturally and time related music is. It's born from the culture of the musicians from that time and place.

The line about the Mother "She's the one they're going to miss in lots of ways" tells you it's a fun song, but it's not a joke

Madness a great ska band. You have probably heard this song lots in commercials. Another fun one to check out by them is "Baggy Trousers".

Brad got this right - its just a fun, catchy song. One of my favorite memories of this song - I remember about 15-20 years ago, I went to buy a sandwich from this local bakery. There were about 5 or 6 people in back doing baking bread, making sandwiches, etc. Then this song comes on, and ALL of the employees start to sing along and you can tell they all just loved this song. It was great.

This song is 40 years old. It came out in the early 80's. Still a great tune today!

This band was massive over here in the UK in the early 80's ...I was just a wee lad when this came out ..this song doesn't really show there talent" it must be love " "embarrassment" "one step beyond" or " night boat to Cairo " are much better :)

I love this song! It is so nostalgic for me. Pure 80s goodness. "In the middle of our street" is different in UK English. They mean that they had the middle house on the block, but they say "in" instead of "on" over in the UK.

Every kid in the 80's loved this song and related to it. I still sing it when working around my house. So nostalgic!

Night Boat To Cairo is my fav song from them. They have lyrics about normal life. It was so refreshing. Was early 80s. And they were funny..

It’s a nostalgic celebration of London working class family life, set to a ska beat. Ska (with Reggae) was originally Jamaican and came to the U.K. with immigrants. It was first popular in the late 60s and particularly in the working class London depicted. “Madness” were part of the late 70s/early 80s revival, particularly on the “Two-Tone” label. The use of brass instruments by many of the groups was a conscious reference to the musics origins with Jamaican “Show Bands” in the early 60s.

It's a fond recollection of the house in which the narrator grew up. There's no hidden meaning. "Our mum is so house proud, nothing slows her down and a mess is not allowed".

Their performance of this on The Young Ones was a classic.

Neil: I hope Mike gets back with the cure.
Vyvyan: No Neil, it's Madness this week.

They are British (you can tell by the accents, c’mon guys!🤦🏼‍♂️) and its early 80s. Some working class Brits weren’t into disco or polished sounding American pop/rock and so this sort of sound emerged which people identified with. Personally I wasnt into them but they had a couple of fun hits back then.

I'm blown away by the fact that people who have been reacting to music for ** years don't know who Madness are and can't recognise Britain after seeing 3 minutes of video (which includes Buckingham Palace). This was a big hit in America too.

In an age where mediocre artists take themselves oh so seriously, a talented band like Madness mucking about is so wonderfully refreshing. And by the way, they started at Dublin Castle in North London, where my band is going to make its London debut next spring. I hope Suggs will show up!

Madness is a UK band very famous in the 80's, they have several hits and their move was called the "Ska"! I love it. Thanks for your reaction and love from France 🇫🇷😘
