Arkana’s Amazon Jungle Center is located on the Ucayali River (one of the branching rivers of the Amazon) next to the Amazonian village of Libertad, home to a majority of Arkana’s staff. 🌿

Libertad, which means “liberty” in Spanish, was founded in 1964 after 10 members of a separate village moved and established their sovereignty as a new community in this region.

Libertad is now home to 65 families and has a population of over 300 people. Their native ancestry can be traced to the Kokama tribe, one of the 44 tribes in the Amazon jungle. As is the case for many of these indigenous tribes, the Kokoma language has nearly become obsolete in the village because Spanish and English are now preferred languages taught in the school systems.

The economy of Libertad thrives on fishing during the rainy season when the river rises, selling anywhere from 100-200 kg of fish daily to nearby towns. During the dry season, produce – rice, beans, corn, yucca, and plantains – from farming is their main source of income.

The people of Libertad live happily in community, each person contributing their role as a valued member of the village. Favorite community pastimes include playing volleyball and soccer during the dry seasons.

Arkana provides employment opportunities to over 30 members of the village on a weekly basis. We work closely with our local community to ensure that we can give back to them generously by contributing to public service projects in the village, such as; providing space for the ladies to sell their handmade crafts, assisting in construction projects, donating toys to the children, installing solar panels for electricity, among other things.
