Valour: Arms and Armour in Old Master Portraits

Charles Mackay from The Weiss Gallery in conversation with Dr Tobias Capwell, Curator of Arms and Armour at the Wallace Collection and Redmond Finer from Peter Finer Ltd.

The Weiss Gallery is exhibiting portraits of historical figures involved in brave acts and great military feats juxtaposed with period weapons and armour, kindly lent by Peter Finer - one of the world's greatest commercial specialists in the field.

In December, The Wallace Collection is presenting a new, monthly 'Meet the Expert' programme of special talks and other online content, with the first instalment taking the theme of 'Armour as Renaissance Art', led by Curator Toby Capwell, who will be sharing with us some of the highlights from the Wallace Collection while also placing the LAW exhibition in a wider historical context.

Charlie will discuss several of the sitters depicted in the portraits, a conversation with the arms and armour guest experts will follow. Together they will analyse the sitter's choice of setting, dress and accoutrements, in the quest for greater insight into the use of arms and armour in portraiture, and the complex meanings that such images could have expressed.
