Taiwan eyeing war in Ukraine with growing sense of crisis | DW News

Taiwan is watching the situation in Ukraine very closely. China views the self-governing island as a renegade province and has vowed to bring it under its control.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and China's Xi Jinping have been working together closely. China has not condemned the invasion. That's led some to believe it could have similar plans for Taiwan. The island is one of the world's key economies and is an important source of semiconductor chips.

I mean it is two very powerful people who pretty much calls the shots in their respective countries. And both of them are insane in their own ways.

"growing sense of crisis" is the wrong terminology... It should be "growing sense of awareness" And above all: China should not be asked to play a mediator between Russia and Ukraine for the same reason you don't ask North Korea to be a mediator between China and Taiwan...

Russia listed Taiwan as one of the unfriendly country. The more recognition you have, the more legitimate you will be in People's eyes. Taiwan is smart.

On the contrary, I fear more for Taiwan now. One uncertain factor (I think) on China's side was how fierce should they strike Taiwan in the first round of attacks. Russia has offered them an invaluable lesson: strike hard and take out all channels of communication at the beginning of the attack. And talking about sanctions, after HK, I could not remain naive that economic interest could deter China's leaders. If sanctions occur, people in the US/Eu are going to struggle just as much as those back in China. This boils down to suppressing discontent which plays to China's advantage where the state is above everything else. I sincerely hope that Taiwan remains safe.

Ukraine is giving them a master class on how to fight tyranny.

This just shows how good the world has had it over the last 75-80 years the US has been the most powerful nation in the world and Pax Americana. China or Russia as the most powerful nation in the world instead of the US would be so much worse for the world

Just as China has been salami slicing its neighbors' territory. Russia has also been doing the same to the territory of its neighbors. Birds of a feather flock together!?

ABSOLUTELY Taiwan is likely to be next. They should be VERY concerned how it goes in Ukraine.

Taiwan needs to be prepared, upgrade their military, arm themselves to the teeth, start digging up tunnels etc.

Growing sense of purpose is more accurate. The 2014 Sunflower Revolution started in Taiwan to protest the KMT sellout to China. Ukraine's defense of freedom has given them hope and a blueprint.

Can you imagine if the US and its allies "sort of promised" to help Taiwan, and then when China invaded decided that they would rather not get into a direct conflict with China? If you can't imagine that, ask a Ukrainian to help you...

Actually the war in Ukraine has done them a big favour, fact the China just watched the whole planet support Ukraine, with only 5 other countries aka, the other usual suspects in support of Russia and now truly isolated on the international stage, in words China fears getting the same kind of response as Russia and the same scale of Sanctions, the other thing being the west just got a whole lot stronger, they fear NATO and the collective defence model it projects which is now being used in their region, collective and cooperation defence agreements being formed by its neighbour's, and reinforced last year by the sheer number of large joint maritime exercises with coalition partners which sent a clear message to China

It is better to "bravely fight" rather than to "cowardly hide" in intervention

This is the time to build all your underground tunnels, safe houses, smuggling routes and stockpiling weapons that you can quickly distribute to the population in case of an emergency. Make the cities extremely difficult to conquer.

Dear DW, once again, please don't be shy confronting "European Supremacy": According to many experts, Taiwan has been and is THE world leader in semiconductors and microchips. The quality that TSMC produces is unmatched and will be very hard to even. Unless I have been listening to the wrong tech-experts, I believe this point should be made clear to viewers, a year ago as much as today. (especially today)

I really hope China learns the lesson that to invade a practically autonomous country will be extremely costly! 🕊️🇺🇦, 🕊️🇹🇼, 🕊️🇺🇳
