Ignoring the whole booze thing, you have to be socially inept to complain to the bride or groom on their wedding day. Time and place. That is neither the time, nor the place. Ask a question, sure, but don't go "voicing frustrations" (whatever the hell that entailed but i feel like we didn't get the full story from OP)

To reply to a couple of comments here: he's not an asshole for being annoyed by the absence of alcohol. You can be annoyed by lots of things and still be a perfectly fine and dandy human being.

He's an asshole because instead of sucking it up and smiling anyway, he complained to them *on the day of their marriage* and made them feel like shit like a spoiled child would.

I care about my guests expectations, I would have mentioned it if I were the couple even if there is no obligation to (yes, I said there is NO obligation, so calm down). If I were surprised, like that guy, I wouldn’t have said anything to the couple. But I would have been inwardly disappointed. I love wine with dinner.

An old Irish friend of mine married a wonderful Indonesian girl.

We live in Singapore. It was a secular Muslim wedding and a wonderful day. The Irish side of the family came over from Cork and the Indonesians from Jakarta of course there is a little tradition of a wee tipple or two at an Irish wedding which is a no no for the Indonesians.

The bride's dad - who was paying for it - is a tee totaler himself and a non smoker but 'a man of the world.' He understood this so we set up a small area off site where if you wanted to step 'off base' and toast the happiness of the couple or have a quick smoke you could.

Nobody got wasted, everyone had fun and it was a great day. They have three kids now and though his wife doesn't drink she doesn't mind if of an evening he steps out onto the balcony for a wee dram with an old friend.

Just don't rub it in other people's faces and you can find a path through.
