Where do you see yourself five years from now? If you have a job interview coming up, your interviewer is going to ask you, “Where do you see yourself five years from now?” This is a goals based question. Your answer could mean the difference between getting the job and losing it.
If want to learn how to answer this question in a way that brings you closer to landing the job, then watch this video and I'll show you exactly how to answer it.

Well I want to give you the ultimate formula for successfully answering this question so employers are more likely to offer you the job.

If you have been interviewing for jobs and not getting second interviews, it's likely that you have been giving a wrong answer about where you see yourself in five years.

Let’s take a look at some details before I give you a top-scoring scripted answer!

#1 For starters, employers only ask this question because they want to understand your vision. That’s right, they want to know that you will be here in the long term.

#2 When you can off them a vision of where you see yourself going, and it’s aligned with their company and the position at hand, then they will have greater reason to believe you’ll be a long term employee.

#3This question is also used to weed out the wrong people. So if your 5 year goal is to own your own company, then that response will signal to the employer that you don’t plan to work here for long.

#4 You want your response to be aligned with where this job is going. And maybe you don’t know that, but I urge you push yourself to think about the next logical steps for yourself as it’s aligned to your occupation..

Watch the video to see how I do this and then apply it to your situation.

In my interview last week I had a variant on this question. My answer was to honestly tell them that I wanted to have made even greater achievements to those I'd already proven and become a Subject Matter Expert in my field. I also told them how I wanted to be 'the' go-to and experienced person that can always be relied upon to get things done right, first time, every time. I continued that I wanted to be able to offer my skills within the organisation and mentor those who most need my help.

It worked, I got the job offer this afternoon!

My answer typically goes like this :

Well it depends on where the company see's itself in 5 years. I am here to make a difference for the company & me for mutual benefit. I wish to take up challenging assignments and add value may be in a very small way but constructively. As long as there are sufficient opportunities and challenges to keep me engaged and motivated, I will churn out the best in me and thrive to give productive results.

Part 1: First two years (learning, be proficient with the procedures, getting certificates...) ; Part 2: Third and Fourth year: Takes a bit further, and express a genuine love of what you do (teaching, helping others...).

Use this Simple Two Step to create your answer. The secret ingredients - Growing, Helping and Serving the Company should be included in your answer.

Great video, thanks for uploading. seems showing an interest in being in a leadership role is a good position to take. Organizations always want someone who can teach, guide and help others develop into a well-rounded employee.

Omg. This is me right now. I got my accounting interview and it really pushed me out of my comfort zone. It was my first time. There's questions I wasn't expecting(situational). And i just answer them honestly, I had no idea i did it right. I got the job. And now my problem is I'm so nervous on my first day.

I’ve been asked a variant of this in performance appraisals such as what are your long term career goals within the company/organization? The tips provided apply in that situation too. Thanks Don for the content!

I went on several interviews and it's kind of nice not really needing a job I'm being extremely picky what job I take if their company views and policies don't match mine then it's not going to be a place for me also I did have that question pop up and interview it kind of made me chuckle to myself because this job was only part-time I thought it would go along with my other jobs and that was the only reason I applied

Hey Don I like your tips and tricks one interview I did I answered that question with a joke and it helped me get the job I replied with “hopefully not living in my parents basement”

My answer to this question was, "You want me to be honest? I don't really know."

My interviewers just gave me a sigh or relief and told me that was actually a good answer. It was...weird.

Would you please give an answer for a time management question? Thanks! I had a question on my last interview about how I would finish my tasks if I had a lot of things to finish within a time period. I have an interview next week .

I did some research on where the five year-question question comes from . So far, the only thing I found related to it it that Joseph Stalin had a five year economical plan. If the interviewer wants to be taken serious by an interviewed applicant, should also be able to answer that question ; Why five years ? what is the origin of that standard ? Enlighten me please.
