How to learn to code, motivate yourself, and stay focused -- or at least how I approach it.

TL;DR: Have an exciting idea and build it in a way that forces you to learn something new (a new language or platform or whatever).

I've worked over the past 20 years as an engineer at companies like Google, Snapchat, Postmates, Bridgewater, Square and received offers from many more great companies.

This is a really nice video. I wanted to see a video from you saying how to grow on a tech career without the need of becoming a people manager, which it looks like its your position right now. Thats the career path I want to pursue (at least it is at this point of time) and it would be awesome to hear from someone who have done that!

Awesome Thank you for sharing! Project-based learning, based on projects you are passionate about n problems you wish to resolve 👌🏻👍🏻 Thats the beauty of SWE, ability to design a solution and tool from cradle to grave that can have huge reach (global) but with very little infrastructure needed (laptop n internet!), no other field is like this 😃

Also this may sound odd, but I Hope you get married and have a family dude 😄 Your at a ripe age from my guesstimate n world needs more of you & u’d be a good father too. All the best n thanks again

Hey David, thank you for this. I have a question. My goal is to improve overall as a software developer and learn every day, but there are so many different things I want to learn that I tend to get lost - I want to improve my knowledge on operating systems, distributed systems, learn golang, participate in coding challenges. I’m not able to find a way to balance all these or figure out how I can go about improving myself in these areas. I get overwhelmed and beat myself up. I would really like to hear your thoughts on how someone aspiring to improve in a lot of different areas can go about achieving their goals. Thank you!

If I am working on something. And I countinue doing it, I feel I am skipping on something. After this I take other task and the same cycle continues. I end up not doing a single thing perfectly. How to stick to one task at a time and not think about anything else?
