Wanamingos! | Fallout Lore

The Wasteland is home to many horrific and bizarre creatures, some of which are mutated by radiation, others by pollution, while few are made with viruses, including one of the strangest creatures imaginable, The Wanamingo. Wanamingos, named after their breeding ground, also known as aliens to the uninitiated, are large bipedal life forms that bear almost no resemblance to any other creature on earth, the closest thing I can think of would be a gulper, the mutated species of salamander, but even they are very different creatures. Wanamingos have prominent central bodies, where you might expect the arms to be, are instead two long appendages, dare I say tentacles, that not only serve as weapons, lashing and batting enemies to death while slowly inducing radiation damage, but also as hands that can grasp and manipulate objects, above their large bodies are larger heads, where no visible sensory organs can be seen, no eyes, ears or nose, only a mouth full of dagger sized teeth, capable of chewing a full grown man to death at a moments notice, but that’s only if you happen to cross paths with a Wanamingo which is incredibly rare.

My job would be far too easy if the developers could actually agree on what is and isn’t canon, but I do enjoy hearing multiple takes on unanswered questions. So, let me know where you think Wanamingos came from and whether or not you think they’re still alive!

One of the weirdest yet most forgotten fallout creatures. Rip wanamingos.

Their obscurity reminds me of the tunnelers from lonesone road and makes me wonder how many hidden creatures are in the wasteland, completely undisturbed. So much money to be made creating stories from that unknown

Between Tunnelers, Trogs & Wanamingos it seems like all kinds of unique mutations take place in isolated areas and underground

It’s really too bad these things didn’t make it into Fallout 3. Same goes for Floaters and a lot of other things cut from the game. It would have been much better if they kept Fallout 3 as being set a couple decades after the war. Then the amount of destruction and lack of progress would actually work. Let’s hope we get these creatures in a different game.

3:25 Fun Fact: There was supposed to be Wanamingo in Fallout 76 with one of the Post-Wastelander updates, around the time the Sheepsquache was added. It was part of a scrapped quest involving what was called “The Grief Gobbler”. At the end of the quest after defeating the large enemy present, be it a gulper, deathclaw, mega sloth, etc, the questgiver was to mention how that creature you encountered isn’t the Grief Gobbler as the quest ends on this peculiar cliffhanger. Added to the code around this time was the Wanamingo plushie, one now available to acquire. The design is more akin to a mixture of this design and either a mirelurk king or frog. Three clawed arms and legs with a body that is mostly dominated by a giant dagger-toothed maw, beady eyes, and spines down its back. Design wise it was indeed inspired by the blue glowing frogs we find in areas like the white spring pool, although more proportional with the large maw. Sadly it was cut.

One of my favourite details about the Wanamingos is that when you target them in F2, even the game interface doesn't know what some of the body parts are. With the eyes replaced with "eyes?" and if you get a critical hit on that body part, the game will say that you damaged the air? intake of the creature.

My personal theory is that when zetans arrived, they unintentionally brought some wanamingos on their ship.

Sad how so many creatures are just dropped or forgotten in the fallout games, Wanamingos are one of the many creatures i would love to see come back.

I remember playing fallout 4 with a mod that adds dlc monsters and brand new monsters like giant bees and sharks, and when I was in the glowing sea I encountered a legendary giant wanamingo (basically the most dangerous variant) and I had no prior knowledge of them from Fallout 1 or 2. As a result I found myself screaming and being bisected within seconds

So FALLOUT has Xenomorphs. . . like the wasteland just wasn't deadly enough. **facepalm**

Probably another creation of Dr. Bourous, who thought that they wouldn't breed and escape the Big Empty

I've never played the original fallouts but this is an enemy I feel like could have been classic like a death claw and supermutant if given the chance

I really wish we could see wanamingos in the newer games. They're a very underrated creature in Fallout.

I was really hoping to see these in New Vegas, but it's essentially a miracle that those devs got done what they did in the amount of time they had.

When I ran Into them in Fallout 2 I was so confused and eventually a bit stressed when I realized they were so tough.

I really prefer how the Fallout 2 Restoration Patch explains their origin with the whole weapon of war idea. They even put on a whole exhibit for people to examine them at the EPA.

Those 3d new Vagas ones would've been absolutely terrifying to find in caves and vaults. Has the floaters been done yet

If there’s zetans, Wanamingos probably are another alien species who came, maybe pre war who was mutated by radiation. Zetans have space suits to protect them from radiation, maybe wanamingos didn’t, they were irradiated hence why they give of rads

I have so much nostalgia for Fallout 2 and I remember those mines well. When I went there it was an exercise in stimpacking myself through the inventory and running up and down the elevator (with my metal armor and assault rifle). Such a good time. Fallout 2 is still peak fallout in my mind, although New Vegas comes close.
