Did Oppenheimer Regret The Atomic Bomb?

On August 6 and August 9, 1945, the U.S. dropped two of the bombs Oppenheimer had helped develop over Hiroshima and Nagasaki. A minimum of 110,000 people are thought to have been killed in the blasts, which wiped out both cities on a scale of devastation never seen before or since. The night of the Hiroshima bombing, Oppenheimer was cheered by a crowd of fellow scientists at Los Alamos and declared that his only regret was that the bomb hadn’t been finished in time to use against Germany. Oppenheimer too served on the scientific committee that recommended the use of the bomb against Japan. While he initially expressed satisfaction with its use, later was horrified by the loss of civilian lives and feared that nuclear weapons could lead to future wars. However, he opposed the development of the more powerful hydrogen bomb and advocated for limited use of nuclear weapons, as well as exploring peaceful applications of nuclear technology, such as power generation.

He was never the same after that he was already dead.

It's very hard to understand who was the real true Oppenheimer.

He might have regretted privately, but publicly it's a different story...

He definitely wasn't proud of it unlike the man who dropped the bomb and felt nothing. But he had to accept what he did and live with that regret.

Just to think how such a small bomb could cause such a huge reaction in less then a milliseconds. The intelligence that went into it is mind blowing

My late granny used to say "Regret too late and don't come to me for forgiveness."
A quote I suspect, but no idea from where.

What's worse was Edward Teller pushing for the far more destructive hydrogen bomb, knowing what both A-bombs did in Japan.

Japan already surrendered before the bomb, and it was also same as surrendering because Japan didn’t have anymore army that can’t fight. But Truman still shotted because it took so many few to create nuke. Oppenheimer and Einstein send message to stop, but Truman literally ignore that. And at the end, Truman underestimated the power of nuke, regret of bombing and find a excuses of justifying bombing otherwise U.S need to pay a lot to Japan. By the way, during that time, killing citizen was actually illegal in United nation law.

110, 000 died instantly. That's not counting all the people who died later from cancer and burns and such.

However, you have to remember that they did warn the populations to get to shelters or leave the city. They dropped leaflets over the towns. They ignored the warnings.

He died at the height of the cold war thinking he invented the very thing that will cause the end of the world.

If it was against enemy military, he would have been proud. But once he realized that civilian lives were lost, he knew that the world would crumble from within. If the Cold War went hot, his prophecy of the world being demolished would have come to fruition and it would all be because of his work developing such a weapon in the first place.

As shameful he MIGHT have been, the fact that the movie about him is getting completely demolished by Barbie has to be the biggest embarrassment ever.

These bombs caused loss of civilian lives, yes. So did Japan's attack on Hawaii! Percentages show one was not worse than the other.
