The "someone in there garage" has always been my personal favorite fermi paradox solution. When technology or our understanding of quantum tech or other physics or biology gets so advanced that one person can destroy the entire planet or galaxy, with billions of people or trillions that an advanced civilization would hold, 1 rogue scientist could kill us all on purpose or by accident.

Hello John, great work on your channel. I really enjoy your musings with my morning coffee :-)
I am a software developer. Our 'holy grail' is a way to write programs that don't need fixing (they do what you expect from the start and forever). It will have to happen before self replicating factories can earn their independence.
I don't want technology to put me out of a job (I remember my Grandfather warning me about the robots taking our jobs) but it would represent a glorious epoch in terms of global software development. I would celebrate that day but, sadly, my experience of the industry (and the people in it) leads me to believe that I will not live to see that day!

The idea of being able to hack our brains does have many potentially dark applications but speaking as someone whose life has been blighted by depression it is an idea I wish was already a reality. If I could undergo a procedure that meant my mind worked for me more than it does against me I would jump at the chance. I certainly would have been a much more productive/useful member of society.
