This was a time when girls were learning they could go to college and have careers. We didnt have to marry right out of high school and have babies or wear bras. My parents encouraged me and I've no regrets. I didn't marry til i was 31 and had 3 girls pretty quickly and then reality it was career and kids and it was tough to balance it all. I knew women who quit work to stay and said go for it
So this song shows we were learning to be free and broke some hearts and had ours broken.
Every song Bread did reflected my life in the 70s.

David Gates and Bread had some of the best love songs. 'Sweet Surrender', 'Make It With You', 'Baby I'm a Want You' are all awesome tunes. 'Diary' from 1972 tops them all for me though, check it out. Also 'Guitar Man' is another tune I love.

Not everything was a love song ballad.... Check out ' 'Let Your Love Go' and 'Mother Freedom' for some more up tempo stuff. Cheers.

"Aubrey" is a gorgeous song that accomplished the nearly impossible by turning a traditional man's name into a (primarily) woman's name almost overnight. How many songwriters can make that claim? :)
