Platinum preppy | Everyone's gateway to fountain pens

In my opinion, all good stationery or fountain pen stores should have a shelf loaded with Platinum preppys (or should that be preppies?).

I would very much recommend that someone new to fountain pens start off with one of these as part of their fountain pen journey. The only downside would be any future pen you might purchase - many price brackets above this - might not have an equivalent or better nib performance.

In this video, I go over the most common nib sizes available and mention which one is the pick of the bunch (for me).

7:27 "... or even another Preppy that hasn't cracked before" this was brilliant, I love it :)

I eyedroppered a Preppy, wrote with it for a couple of weeks, and then it accidentally ended up in a drawer in my desk, and it completely slipped my mind, a tell-tale sign of having too many inked pens. Found it a year later, uncapped it and it just .. wrote. Love these little pens. I bought an 05 a few weeks ago and I was quite surprised that it's more like a Western M.
I like your channel, by the way. I've been subscribed for a while and have watched a bunch of videos, and they're always nicely made. Keep up the good work!

These look great for the price (although I prefer the look of the Plaisir), and I wish they sold the nibs separately so I could get all three!

I've got like 3 different generations of preppies over the past 8 years and I find that the older ones I have are the sturdiest. That is the ones with the almost entirely printed gray on clear body and the clear with printed text on body ones. The most recent generation with the coloured bodies like in the video are not as sturdy and feel more flimsy and also happen to have cracked the soonest out of all my preppies, considering I have ones almost a decade old, go figure. The barrel seems to be either thinner or made of a weaker plastic compared to the older ones, haven't quite figured that out.

The nib of the Platinum Preppy/Plaisir/Prefounte is a very nice nib and surprisingly wet for its fine line. I have some Preppys and a Plaisir. I have a problem with the Plaisir when I accidentally dropped it, the plastic section cracked, so I changed the section with a Preppy. I agree with you, this pens are great writers but unfortunately its plastic is not very resilient, when my Plasir dropped everything was fine except the olastic part, a little disappointing but fortunately I could resolve it, i guess is a blessing on disguise that all entry level platinum pens have interchangeable parts 😂.
Thank you for the video.

The Preppy writes best of all the budget pens I own. The Pilot Kakuno has a prettier nib, but the Preppy is smoother and half the price. I'd say it's even a tad smoother than the TWISBI Eco and Lamy Safari, much more expensive pens. I even like the standard blue cartridge the Preppy comes with. The ink shades quite nicely.

I really like this pens for the value. Yes they crack. What I do is I eyedrop them and seal them with crazy glue instead of grease. Once I finish the ink get rid of them.

The usual line of preppies don't speak to me, however, the special editions are beautiful. 😁

In your conclusion, you are holding up a #3, that's a Fine. So which is it, the sweet spot, is it the #2 EF or the #3 F ?

I have a problem on my Preppy EF, the pen always drying after a few seconds not use uncapped. Maybe it's the nib or is it just the ink? I refilled it with Diamine Quartz black.
Maybe someone can help me? I'm still new to fountain pens.

They're quite difficult to hold when hands are sweaty

Does anyone know what ink the Preppy cartridges come with? I do not like using cartridges so would like to get the same bottled ink instead.
