So I'm very fortunate. I played Space Marine 1 and Boltgun. Loved the lore and stopped by my local Warhammer store. The owner gave me a free mini and the people were nice. The owner invited me to visit the following Sunday to paint free Ultramarine figures to get a feel for it, they even gave one to my gf who painted right beside me. Was an amazing experience and I just bought my first figure. Ghazghkull Thraka, I'ma be an orc guy and I'm super excited to get my primer and officially start painting him!

Too late, I’m already 400$ deep and have yet to play one game, call me stupid I love putting the models together and can’t wait to start painting.

If you’re wanting to get started, the Combat Patrol Magazine seems like the best way to start - get the first 4 or 5 magazines, you’ll have paints, a handful of minis, and rules to try your first small scenario - after that, you’ll either be hooked, or decide it’s not for you. The magazine is really cheap (especially the first few issues) and you’ll have no difficulty re-selling them if you’re not into it.

This game rekindled my love of warhammer. I haven't painted a mini since I was a kid in the 90s/early 00s.

I’ve spent thousands and thousands of dollars over the last 7 years in warhammer minis and paint and I’ve only played 5- kill team games in that time frame haha and I fucking love it

Glad you mentioned Kill Team as me and my friends have decided this is the most affordable way to actually play Warhammer on tabletop. Gives us a taste for the bigger factions and if we ever truly commit to it then we might already have some models to work with depending on what Kill Teams we have. I’m actually painting Intercessors and Assault Intercessors because I knew they were useable in both 40K and in Kill Team.

Kill team is what my friend and I do. We wanted to start (before SM2 came out) and were like "dude, 600+ euros just for the miniatures?". My friend now sits at around 500 euros for a kill team, many, many colors, a codex, a hivestorm box in addition to his kill team, oh my god. But... He is still quite looking forward a LOT to the hobby.

I’d personally recommend just buying your favorite army’s combat patrol; it’s generally going to give you the closest experience to an actual game of 40K at a much smaller price point, plus if you do decide to go for the full army you’ll already have your rule book and around (really depends) 500pts for your roster

As a new player I also picked up the starter guide and it helped me a lot.
After that I purchased priner, some colors and a box of Space Marine Assult Intercessor (10 Marines) just to practice on painting. Looking forward to see where this guides me.

buy a few paints, brushes, and the ONE model you really like.

Key word "ONE"

I had some friends that played 40k all the time. I thought it looked neat so I spent $150 or so on some ‘nids. By the time I got them painted up they had stopped playing 😂. I ended up giving them away. Still love the universe.

I bought the 50$ starter kit that came with 15 minis. Im hooked. Space Marine 2 is the tip of the iceberg if your debating to get into this. There are 1000s of hours of lore on top of 1000s of books. Once you get into the models it is very expensive but if you enjoy strategy games, painting, collecting, or just being creative this is a very solid hobby

I would definitely recommend skipping the getting started box it’s a waste of money if there are games workshop stores near you because if your new and go into a warhammer store they will explain all that to you and let you paint a free model with paint and brushes they have available just for going in they will also offer a introductory game of Warhammer where they guide you, the kill team recommendation is a good one and ware I started and you can later use those models in your army if you wanna play full 40K eventually

I bought an Astra Militarum combat patrol after finishing the game, honestly having a blast working my way through it and painting it - ordered a Leman Russ after about two weeks and I'm pumped waiting for it to ship lol
