Debunking 7 Autism Myths in 5 Minutes or Less

For World Autism Awareness Week, I thought I'd quickly debunk 7 common autism myths in roughly five minutes or less!

It wouldn't surprise me if the male/female ratio is even less than 3/1. Females are still less likely to be diagnosed or to seek diagnoses, or so it seems. That said, if people went solely by the ratio of female/male autism discussion sites on social media, it would seem as if the vast majority of autistics are female. That's not a lament and is probably simply because females seem to be more eloquent than males at discussing and describing the subject.

My family and friends said I was only covering up my ears and eyes and having meltdowns for attention but that was not true. I just didn’t know what to do so I was wearing a hat first of all and wearing ear phones and then started wearing sun glasses and ear plugs over time. Love the video by the way. Great job.

Yesss, thank you. I always hear the empathy thing. For me, Im constantly overwhelmed with empathy and I just feel ridiculous.

I'm autistic, and I do indeed have a lot of empathy that's overwhelming. About one of the other myths, some children who got certain types of biomedical and behavioral interventions at a very young age improve to the point where nobody can tell they're autistic anymore.

My current level of empathy is a result of the NT classmates i had in school who didnt even know i was autistic but still toyed eith my emotion as well as teased, bullied my and in one instance sexually harrassed me(the agressor was also a guy). All this BS i had to deal with result in the dact that i give 0 shits anymore and just want to be left alone

I don't like it when people think my blank expression means I'm in a bad mood.
I was standing in a bus stop when a woman said I was nice but I always had a face on me (meaning bad mood).

An autistic person may not be expressing empathy to another person not because they don't feel it, but because they don't know what to do. In other words, if they are struggling with interacting with someone that is not going to go away just because someone is really sad. That's hard for an NT to understand, because they tend to assume autistic difficulties can be overcome if the motivation is just big enough.

Like what most have said already, that last bit hit the nail on the head. I usually know instantly that something is wrong. I may not know what it is, but I do notice if the behavior is out of ordinary for the person. I'm 34 and was diagnosed this year.

Thank you! I choose not to go to Our Mother’s Celebration of Life (again) my Mothers been gone 2 yrs, 9/12/2019. My Family appears to think I’m Heartless? That’s their feelings. I just can’t keep burying her.over & over again. It’s a horrible feeling. Yet I’m excepted to Grow up & get over my sad Feelings 🥺💔I had written & was read when I was asked to say something at her Ceremony Sept 2019. She had a small ceremony at her Church. R.I.P. Mom you are an Amazing Angel. Autistic don’t have Empathy, 💔 my behind! Thank you. For the debunking myths, I did not & will NOT forget my Mom, I just choose to Not to keep burying her Anymore.

I'm autistic and a empath. I saw on a video lots of austicis are empaths. I feel like austicis are very innocent and nice people. I got taken advantage of all through out my years of working but idk if its cause autism or that I look small, maybe both lol but I can never stand up for myself until I reach my breaking point. The bullying started when I started working and that's when life got hard in general for me.

question.. do you still have speech delay when you are 2 to 3 years old?
