There are two ways of doing hysteroscopy, one under general anaesthesia and one under local anaesthesia. If there is a certain indication that your doctor thinks that your hysteroscopy can be done as an outpatient then they usually offer you a local anaesthetic hysteroscopy. It can cause a mild cramp for you but the doctor would take care of your pain by giving you a local anaesthetic. Majority of the hysteroscopy are often under general anaesthesia. As it is being done under general anaesthesia you tend to notice that it is completely pain free process.

I just had this done yesterday! Was wide awake with no local/general anesthesia or having taken any oral painkiller. Thankfully my gynae did it super quickly. The biopsy gave me some cramps but nothing i couldnt handle. Cramps went away after an hour or so. Hope this positive experience of mine helps anyone who might be going through this soon!

Only a person who hasn’t had one could say a hysteroscopy is a painless procedure!! I had one without any anaesthetic, as this was not offered to me. It was like medieval torture and I went into a shocked catatonic state for half an hr afterwards. I have had a further 2 under general anaesthetic and yes then it is painless. Apart from the period like pains afterwards. I have one today in fact and am up and about pain free already.

Had this a few weeks ago. No anesthesia. Extremely unpleasant, but it had to be done so that my OB/GYN could figure out what wrong. Home now recovering from a radical hysterectomy.

This is a lie and it is very painful. I got off the table when I was having it. I got dressed and went home. It was horrible and I'm no coward.

Sadly under the nhs the target is 90% in outpatients. Which means for most women, no preparation, no understanding and no pain relief whatsoever. Uk ladies, you have the right to DEMAND general anaesthetic if that's what you want. At least 1 in 3 women are known to suffer extreme pain/trauma scores of 7+, and many more of pain scores of 5 to 7. Women are currently not able to give informed consent for this procedure because they're not fully informed of their options. I have had 3 under general anaesthetic, and although I still wake up in severe pain, in day surgery you are given as much iv pain relief as necessary to get you comfortable. The torture and brutalisation of women must stop.

local anesthesia can make it less painful?

Pain free! That is an outright lie. I can tolerate pain but that was the most brutal procedure that I have ever endured. I would rather have another c-section than do this. If I had known how much pain was associated with this I would not have done it.

This procedure is not at all painful, I just had 2 days ago under anaesthesia on the 6th day of my periods. Didnot had any complications even after coming back home. I would suggest Pls don't panic and talk to your Dr before this process to clear your doubts, if any. There was some spotting, but it stopped after a day.

I had this today. Its a little painful yes but heaven forbid its anything worse like the C word then I can only imagine that is horrendously painful. Going through the cervix is a little uncomfortable period cramps kind of feeling but then again I've been through childbirth 12 hrs of pain so this is nothing really. Just breath slowly. Having the biopsy did hurt but I certainly wasn't screaming! Felt stingy then sharp pain that last 30 seconds the most. Still spotting and having a few cramps if I had to do it again I would still having without GA. Anyone having this don't take notice of the horror stories it's not meant to tickle!

I have few Questions with respect to HSG Test.

1.) On which date of period it should be done?

2.) Any kind of antibiotics should be taken before the test or after the test so that any kind of infection is not done?

3.) Any injection or medicine is given before the test?

Please revert if possible

Thanks a lot in advance
