A brilliant review there peter, as I said in your original W1 review the rebuilt version is my preferred version and hopefully may be able to get one one day.
Your additions to your model really did enhance the look of it especially with the lamps at the front.

I love these even if they have flaws, just can't afford paying 300 dollars for a model train

Reversing rod on the right hand side of the engine? But its not connected to the valve gear. The reverser has to lift the die block in the expansion link, so I don't think it's that. Looks more like the grate rocking lever to me. Perhaps the rotary drive from the rear driver is for a speedo, but I would have thought that would be on the driver's side. As the ejector pipe is on the right hand side, I assume she was right hand drive. be interesting to know the actual storey.

Super review of this unique locomotive. LNER fans are lucky that Hornby made this and in several versions. I agree that some of the problems that have arose are certainly not the fault of Hornby. Models being damaged in transit is something that can always happen and should be returned for repair. As a GWR fan I can only hope that someone will make the Great Bear another one off locomotive. Both your models look very smart. I can understand if you give in to temptation and buy another version.. Thanks for showing Regards Paul 🚂🚂🚂

I do prefer the looks of the rebuild, even if it’s easy to mistake for an A4 at a glance. My problem with these models still is the way Hornby shafted the retailers and then charging such a high price. I know some have had stiffness issues which is kind of surprising as you’d expect the mechanism is very close to Gresley pacifics, and for what these cost, it ought to be perfect. I am very glad yours are (both) great and making you happy because, let’s face it, that’s what it’s about.

The elephant in the room for me is that floating axle. I can live with them being flangeless if they turn and don’t overhang like mad, but what’s really annoying is I have a US 2-8-4 loco which doesn’t have this issue. The older Triang and Hornby pacifics used a separate swinging pony truck under the cab which might be less accurate to real life but didn’t give hovering wheels. Other locos had wider tyres and axles which could slide quite freely side-to-side. I wonder even if a very basic gear or belt could be used to drive the floating wheels causing them to turn at the same speed as the other axle right in front of it 🤔

Hi Peter
Great honest review
The rear truck wheels don't bother me.
Only issue for me is the should some hand rails be black or grey?
Yes hornby should of put some lamps in details pack
Keep safe arp
