How to add a big curly bracket to multiple lines in Microsoft Word

A big curly bracket is used normally in the situation of piecewise functions or simultaneous equations to encompass multiple lines.

To create a big curly bracket, insert an equation box and then insert the required amount of lines from the matrix tab. From here highlight all the boxes and insert a curly bracket.

If u want to type this without having to select the different sections in the equation editor (its a lot faster when you're writing a lot of math) you can type the following instead (after opening the equation editor):

{\matrix(@@&)<1sp>\close<2sp>

Explanation:
1. <1sp> means you press the spacebar once and <2sp> means you press the spacebar twice.
2. word will create a matrix with "@" +1 rows and "&"+1 columns on the right side of the bracket.
3. by writing \close and pressing the spacebar twice word will extend the curly bracket to encompass all three rows of the matrix.

NOTE: For further info/explanation there's a great resource called the "Complete Reference on Ms Word Equation Editor Shortcut" for these equation editor 'commands' however I can't add the link cause youtube keeps disappearing my comment if I include it. Hope this helps 🤪.
