The Whisker menu is much nicer than the applications menu, and you'll also want menulibre for customizing the menus. Whisker menu allows you to put pin your favorites with a right click on the app icon. My favorite thing about Xfce is that it's fast and lightweight. I really want just a minimal config -- no desktop icons, a small panel at the bottom with MPD controls, the weather plugin, clock and notifications. Xfce is also very friendly to hotkeys (hey, the Windows key has a use after all.) One benefit of turning off the desktop icons is the right click menu moves applications to be the top level menu, so it eliminates the extra click on applications.

For themes and icons -- Yaru Bark Dark is less dark, a brownish dark grey. And I love the Gruvbox Plus Dark. The icons on the Whisker menu look so nice with that combo.

I really like Xfce. For me it is best middle ground between window manager and desktop env. It is so lighweight, I use it even on modern systems.

Thanks Mr. Mench. I'm currently running XFCE on MX Linux. I'm using KDE Plasma with Endeavour OS installed on another laptop. Both DE's work brilliantly.

I'd like to "Menchion" what a good video this is.

I love XFCE. It has some shortcomings I admit, but I forgive a lot of those because they stem from its attempt to use as few resources as possible, or from its long CDE heritage. Sometimes both. Its panel is less intuitive than I'd like to set up, mostly.

MATE does the panel better, but whiffs on the WM.

I'm currently running a complete XFCE setup, but it's possible to mix and match components, if you consider everything related to the panel to be "one component". Definitely don't be afraid to use the apps for either, at least. I dunno how I'd get by without atril on XFCE, for example. And engrampa helped me work around a very stupid dependency on Gnome's file-roller specifically due to their common ancestry. But I prefer Thunar to Caja, I actually still use xfburn, and Mousepad is my go-to Just Edit The File GUI Notepad-type thing. (If I want a real editor, I have nvim.)

I used Xfce exclusively until I discovered and tested Hyprland, and now I just cant go back. The traditional desktop paradigm is dead to me, and I never thought I’d say that.

I used to like XFCE and Cinnamon until I lived in KDE plasma for a while. Now I can never go back.
