With our first frost coming soon, we’re stepping up our harvests of tomatoes, peppers, winter squash, green beans, and celery in hopes of avoiding a frantic last minute harvest before the frost.

OYR is all about growing a lot of food on a little land using sustainable organic methods, while keeping costs and labor at a minimum. Emphasis is placed on improving soil quality with compost, mulch, and compost tea. No store-bought fertilizers, soil amendments, pesticides, compost activators, etc. are used.

How satisfying it must be to grow your own food.  People think they need lots of acres, but so much can be grown on your average building lot!

It seems that winter is trying to come early this year, Patrick! It was 41° here yesterday morning! I guess that's why my tomatoes decided to play out early this year. This was by far the shortest summer growing season I have ever had! Guess the plants know something that I didn't ; ) Great vid, my friend!

If you have a sunny, warm place you can bring your pots of peppers indoor to continue producing. Peppers and tomatoes are perennials in hot climate.

The best way to preserve beans is to salt them in a large crock. Layer of salt on the bottom, slice beans and lay on top, another layer of salt to cover. Keep doing this as the season progresses, whether you harvest a tub or a handful. They keep for years if necessary.
Pull some out as wanted, rinse the salt off, soak for several hours in a few changes of water to reduce the salt. They taste as good as fresh beans.

What a great start to the harvest. I've just bought in my butternuts as we had a frost here in Hertfordshire, England, yesterday. I'm also looking forward to my first ever sunchoke harvest, we call them jerusalem artichokes here, but mine are a more normal 7 feet tall. Your mushrooms look delicious, i'd love to try to growing some.

Really nice harvest Patrick! We had ours mid-September at the cottage, but at home we are still okay. Will be harvesting this week also and take some cutting to start new plants, don't want to bring to much garden plants inside this year, had enough trouble last year with pests ;)
