Ford Mustang GTD Nurburgring Lap Time Update!

Ford built the incredible Mustang GTD for many different reasons, but one reason seems to be more important to Ford than any other, breaking the Nurburgring lap record. Ford spent about 4 months testing the GTD at the Nurburgring and since then, Ford's been using some pretty strong language about their quest to dominate the Nurburgring. But then about a month ago, the Mustang GTD left the Nurburgring and we never got a lap time. So after all the testing and all the big talk, millions of us want to know, what's going on with the GTD's lap record?

On October 2nd the supercarblog reported that Ford had abandoned their lap record attempt due to bad weather. And then the following day the drive reported that Fords testing operations had shut down and they would need to wait until spring to resume testing. But then on October 16th ford released this short teaser video about the GTD's Nurburgring lap time.
And after Ford released the video, motor authority reported that the Ford has set an official lap time for the GTD and it is most likely less than seven seconds.

And it's hard to imagine Ford would have done this if they didn't have something to brag about.
In the teaser video, Ford states that "no North American manufacture has done a sub-seven-minute lap yet" so from this we can determine that either the GTD has completed a sub-seven-second Nurburgring lap time, or Ford is Extremely confident it can. So a lap time of less than seven minutes is reasonable to expect. The teaser video also states that the GTD was designed to “beat the Europeans on their turf." So when Ford mentions the "Europeans" do they mean every car company in Europe, or is this a generalized statement that hints at the manufacturers best known for building sportscars, like Porsche, Ferrari, mclaren and Lamborghini?
And just how possible is any of this? If ford wants to break the current Nurburgring lap record the GTD is going to need to do it in less than 6 minutes, and 29.09 seconds, which is the current record set by the Mercedes AMG One. And just to put that into perspective, the fastest nurburgring lap time ever achieved by a Ford mustang is 7 minutes and 39.28 seconds, which was set by the Mustang Shelby GT500. That's a difference of 1 minute and 10 seconds. And if you're wondering about the latest Ford GT, no Nurburgring lap time has ever been announced.  To be honest with you, I don't expect the AMG Ones lap record to be broken by anyone anytime soon, but if Ford is looking to beat Porsche, Ferrari, mclaren and lamborghini, then I do believe *that* is possible, and Ford only needs to be concerned with one car, the Porsche 911 GT2 RS with the Manthey Racing kit installed, which has a nurburgring lap record of 6 minutes and 47.3 seconds, and I expect porsche to beat this and I even made a video all about it, which will link at the end of this video.
Now technically the GT2 RS lap time shouldn't stand as an official manufacturer's lap time since the car has been significantly modified by another company. So the true 2nd place goes to mercedes once again, with the AMG GT Black Series which has a lap time of six minutes and 48 seconds.
As far as the specs for the Mustang GTD, it is powered by a 5.2-liter supercharged V8 engine that produces 815 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque. The engine powers the rear wheels only and an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission is mounted at the rear for better weight distribution. But more importantly than it's extremely powerful engine, the GTD is fitted with trick suspension designed by multimatic, and a bevy of active aerodynamics, which will be more useful on the Nurburgring than sky high horsepower. But the GTD also has some serious disadvantages, mainly its weight, and the large drag-inducing front end.

That's less than 7 minutes.... Not 7 seconds😂. Why do you mix 7 seconds and 7 minutes. 😮

As the proud owner of a 2018 GT2 RS Weissach w/magnesium wheels (with SS braided brake lines, pagic racing brake pads and MR Aero bits, not including the wheel discs) and as an Aerospace Engineer with a large American defense contractor I am tremendously impressed with the effort Ford went thru to build and front engine Mustang with a rear transaxle to try and set a sub 7 minute 'Ring time. i don't know what the GTD weighs but if it isn't under 3, 200 lbs you are going to be at a disadvantage.

1. I think it's fair to say that they haven't done it yet. We would hear all about it. 2. Porsche now owns Manthey racing or is the major stake holder and offers products on their cars from the factory, almost solely so they have an even better Ring time. 3. There is a new Corvette coming out that should be under 7min and 4. There will be a 992.2 GT2RS that will be even quicker than the 991 GT2RS Manthey.

991.2 GT2RS is not heavily modified, MR is official package dealer can install on the car on request it’s include carbon discs on rear wheels, some aerodynamic bits, and different springs and dumpers, also different compound brake pads, exhaust and engine is not tuned or modified, so it’s is factory car lake corvette with zo6 package. All I get from your video is that gtd did not get record and went back empty handed, maybe next year

There was a clip in ford official pages stating that the documentary will be released in October 29th! But then they deleted these clips

So the best case scenario for Ford is to beat the laptime of the old GT2 RS? A car that's now nearly 7 years old? 😂

Well at my track in the longest straight…most cars including race cars hit 235-245 klm (in Canada so metric) in my GT2RS without the manthey upgrade I’ve reached 275 klm …I’m not a professional.. more like gear head weekend warrior…obviously on Hoosiers it’s where I catch up to many pros .. never raced but have been a track lapping guy for the past 25 years… have 5 track cars ..

altohugh technicalities are at play, I think the GTD (although incredible) is as much of a production car as the GT2RSMR. It is built for purpose, not unlike everyone who said the Radical SR8 laptime wasn't a road car when it went under 7 minutes 19 years ago.

TRhe GTD is an incredible and amazing thing and yes I would love one, but it really isn't a "production car" any more than an AMG One is. They are limited run special machines. Just my opinion, and yesI think this will beat the GT2RS, and then the battle will continue and Porsche will take it back again in the not too distant future.

How long does it take one ☝🏾 loud mouth manufacturer to set a lap time? You seriously sound like some gtd fanboy…. Factcheck says Manthey racing is actually PORSCHE…

Ford might want to stay in their lane and 7 seconds 😂😂😂😂😂

Ford GTD NEVER ran a good time… In 2014 Nissan GTR ran 7.08 … FORD FAILED…

That last record was from a 2014 gt500, not a 2020 gt500.
