2025 Ford Mustang GTD Technical Deep Dive

The Mustang GTD emerges from a collaborative effort between Ford and Multimatic, the minds behind the Mustang GT3, Mustang GT4, and the victorious Ford GT at Le Mans. This automobile stands as the pinnacle of engineering progress, a culmination derived from years of learning through competitive racing endeavors. Through meticulous craftsmanship and precision engineering, it is set to carve its name into the annals of both Mustang and Ford history.

Underneath its sleek exterior, the Mustang GTD houses a specially crafted supercharged 5.2-liter V8 engine equipped with dual air inlets. This powerhouse represents the zenith of street-legal Mustangs in terms of horsepower, a testament to Ford's ingenuity.

A unique facet of the Mustang GTD lies within its utilization of a dry-sump engine oil system, a pioneering feature for a road-worthy Mustang. This innovation ensures that the engine remains well-lubricated even during intense and sustained cornering maneuvers, maintaining peak performance throughout.

As the engine's tachometer needle races past the 7,500 RPM mark, an orchestra of extraordinary tones resonates from the available titanium active valve exhaust system, a symphony born from engineering excellence.

The Mustang GTD's performance prowess is not confined solely to raw power. Its short-long arm front suspension configuration augments lateral rigidity, particularly during high-G cornering scenarios. Meanwhile, the rear suspension boasts an ingenious integral link pushrod and rocker arm structure. This arrangement accommodates Adaptive Spool Valve shock absorbers and coil over springs arranged horizontally within a robust and lightweight motorsport-style tubular subframe. The outcome is a motion ratio of 1:1 from pushrod to damper, resulting in unparalleled responsiveness that adapts diligently to track nuances.

To the delight of handling enthusiasts, the Mustang GTD derives its road-hugging capability and cornering stability from sizeable 325 millimeter front tires – akin in width to the rear tires of the Ford GT – and even broader 345 millimeter rear tires. These formidable rubber companions are mounted on either 20-inch forged aluminum wheels or the available forged magnesium wheels. The magnesium variants embody the optimal fusion of weight and sturdiness, their design mirroring the aesthetics of the Mustang GT3 race car.

Nestled behind these wheels are the substantial BremboTM carbon ceramic brakes, strategically engineered to disperse heat and ensure unwavering stopping power, permitting later and more consistent braking into the heart of corners. Cooling ducts positioned beneath the rear suspension assist in dissipating rear brake heat.

Mobilizing the Mustang GTD is a feat accomplished by channeling power from the engine to the rear wheels through a carbon fiber driveshaft, firmly connected to an 8-speed rear transaxle. This configuration begets near-perfect 50/50 weight distribution between the front and rear, a strategic maneuver arrived at through rigorous lap-time simulations and powertrain dyno testing.

The pursuit of excellence doesn't cease with mechanics alone. A cutting-edge semi-active suspension system adds an additional layer of performance refinement. This technology empowers the manipulation of spring rates and ride height, a potent combination for enhancing on-road and on-track capabilities independently. The adaptive spool valve damper mechanism, with its dual spring rates and adjustable height, delivers two distinct states, each augmenting performance in its unique context. Moreover, the suspension's adaptability enables a nearly 40 mm lower ride height in Track Mode and expands the track width by nearly four inches compared to the Mustang GT.

In terms of availability, the Mustang GTD will grace the market in limited numbers, and its price point is projected to initiate around $300,000 MSRP. This price tag corresponds to the rumored 800 horsepower that lurks beneath its meticulously crafted exterior.

The closest I will get to driving this thing will most definitely be in the new 2023 Forza Motorsport game

I can't even afford to think about this thing, but I guess I'm glad it exists.

The best part is that it's not a Chinese, battery powered auto-cart, more suited for golf courses.

Did I see double wishbone suspension!?! Finally!

I foresee allot of Body kits coming out for the 2024 to make them look like the GTD

*Well at least it's $200, 000 less than a Ford GT*

Glad to see this video. The number of people running seeing thinking the GTD is mid-engined is TOO DAMN HIGH😅

It looks awesome but it damn Mustang are supposed to be affordable. I’m glad I have my ‘14 GT. I’m also glad that Ford is keeping the name alive when the other two are killing the Camaro and Challenger!

Yea I know people are offput by the cost compared to the GT3 RS, but I think its because we're thinking about the Mustang as the underdog when I think the conversation really should be more about how Porsche is going to be an overachiever (as they always have been) with a more compromised car than the mustang... that's pretty much how you have to justify the Porsche being a better value. I cant get how people who are making surface level assessments of both cars, look at Multimatic basically turn a mustang GT3 race car into a road/track car, and then say the porsche is more "race car". even as extreme of a car as the GT3 RS is, I still think the mustang will be more racecar, even for the price...

I mean without going to deep into it, fords made a big deal out of the transaxle setup for a good reason; the GTD is now categorically a front-mid engine car. and its not just that you can boast about a 50/50 weight distribution, but that the weight is likely more inboard than any of the road going Porsches (I probably dont have to tell you why thats a good thing). If you couldn't tell by now, transaxle cars are cool as hell and I think makes the ford every bit as exotic as the Porsche.

Also, considering that the GTD is largely based on the GT3 car (and by extension depend on Multimatic's engineering & manufacturing expertise); the chassis is likely to be every bit as stiff and light as the Porsche, with suspension that's just as sophisticated... fun fact: Red bull's success with the 2022 regs is largely thanks to the chassis/platform control owing to Multimatic's DSSV semi active damper technology, not too dissimilar to that that found in the mustang.

And of coarse one could say the engineering might of Stuttgart have to a large extent turn those compromises into strengths, but it does leave you thinking that they aren't starting on the same foot. With it being a lighter and more powerful car, I wouldn't be surprised if the GTD took the production record from the GT2 RS MR (not really counting the Merc P1 since they really havent started production) and if it does, that would actually make it a bargain with gt2s still being well into 300k and some even going for close to 500k with the MR kit. but If its just by the numbers (something that I still think Porsche cares about), I think the mustang might just about have the GT3 RS beat (the mustang is slightly more powerful, lighter etc)... I think it really should'nt be a hot take to say the porsche, with all of its on the fly tuning, is a more playful track toy, while the ford is a more serious racing car (atleast in character).

There’s so much ignorance around this car. People are losing their minds about the price because it’s “Just a Mustang”

It’s not a Mustang. It’s a race car modded for the street that was designed to aesthetically resemble a Mustang. That’s about where the similarities begin and end.

Double wishbone used to be pretty commonplace, it's why old Hondas are so fun. Now, one has to go into six-figures to get it. Nuts.
