I've been using these guides since about February of this year. This man has single handedly gotten me 99 str, hitpoints, atk, ranged, and now magic. I’d kill to still have this guy actively making OSRS guides. I used these to max my main totally afk, and now going to adapt this a little bit to max my pure. These type of real guides for actual working adults (most of us from RS2 are now in our late 20s, early 30s) are sooo useful. I’m not a basement dwelling neckbeard kid playing 12 hours a day anymore. Practical ways to afk and connect to my PC at home, without being a botting turd, are invaluable.

Alright guys, I did some testing! (Most cost efficient - not max xp)


Use Staff of the Dead/Light over Smoke Battlestaff! Dead/Light staff has a 5% damage boost over Smoke staff which gives an extra max hit from 18 to 19 (with Chaos Gauntlets + Occult necklace - which is a must). Most miss that Dead/Light staff has a 1/8 chance to ignore runes when cast, which lowers the average cost/cast from 121 (97 + 12 + 12) to 106, which is only 9gp more per cast compared to Smoke battlestaff which only use Chaos rune. This extra max hit raises the xp from around 43-44k xp/h to 45-46k/h, which is quite alot when you do this for maybe 100-200 hours.


An example of this difference; 75 mage to 94 mage is 6, 7m xp.
With Smoke Bstaff: 43k xp/h = 155 hours = 186k Chaos rune = 18, 1m cost
With Staff of the Dead/Light = 46k xp/h = 145 hours = 174k Casts (106gp/ea) = 18, 4m cost
So you see here, Dead/Light staff is 10 hours less of this, and costs only 300k more in the long run.


Also mage accuracy makes almost no difference, so wearing Dragon chainbody/platelegs/boots is well worth it for afk-ness. Farseer helm and malediction ward works great to keep mage positive.


Hope it helps you guys, might to some calculations on Death/Blood Runes aswell, they cost more but also alot more xp. If you can do money methods that get you like 1m/h its worth doing Death/Blood runes.

2024 UPDATE:
I cooked up a better gear set for this that lets you AFK longer and is even cheaper. It maximizes crush defense as that is what all the monsters you fight use:
- Slayer Helmet (i) (un-imbued works too)
- Blessed Spirit Shield
- Dragon chainbody or Bloodbark body
- Bloodbark legs
- Guardian boots are the best, but dragon boots are fine too
- Ring of suffering is the best, but Berserker ring (i) or seers ring are fine too
- God cape imbued
- Occult
- Smoke battlestaff
- Chaos gauntlets

Crush defense with this setup is a massive 270! While still keeping magic attack high enough for max XP gains.

The other important part that has changed is that you can AFK longer than 20 mins! There are other guides on how to do this, but basically you put something heavy on your arrow keys to keep your camera spinning with your cursor constantly selecting different tiles. With this setup I am getting 45k XP/hr and can AFK for over 2 hours.

Well, Chaos runes have halved in price since the making of this video.

I'll recommend an alternative for players with higher defense that don't mind slightly less AFK (still over 10 minutes, just depends on how much absorption you want to use).
Full elite void with mage helm, occult necklace, seer's ring (i), imbued god cape, eternal boots, and book of darkness. Just cast the highest level blast/wave/surge spell you have available. At level 91 magic, I'm casting Earth Surge for 82k xp/hr and only about 2.9 gp/xp.

If you feel like you're taking too much damage, just trade some of the items out for higher defense alternatives. Still much more AFK than most methods in the game, and significantly better value and a lot faster than casting bolt. At least I think, I guess I never tested Fire Bolt.

Consider wearing a rune chainbody as it has only *-15* mage bonus instead of the platebody's *-30*
and also *+6* *crush* defence over the platebody since the snake, Kendall and the trapped soul all use *crush* *style* *melee*

Always use the shield slot for defence, It's very inefficient to use a god book for the shield slot in this situation. Use a rune kiteshield and swap the legs for mystic and you've got yourself free 18 magic bonus while maintaining basically the same defence.
