Going for weight-loss surgery may help people with severe obesity live about six years longer. For those who also suffer from diabetes, they may add even more years to their lives. These are among findings from a Singapore study of data from almost 175,000 patients. Metabolic-bariatric surgery involves removing or sealing off a portion of the stomach. It's offered to obese patients younger than 60 who have seen no progress through diet or lifestyle changes and medication. For those with both obesity and diabetes, it's found that the surgery can also lower their death risk by 60%.
