Very bad experience with Travel Guard. I lost part of my luggage, had several cancelled flights and while I was abroad it was almost impossible to communicate with them. In the few times they answered they played ping pong with me. Things like “ I will put you thru some department which never happened or just waiting on the phone for 20 or 30 minutes and nobody picking up the phone were very common. I was exhausted and defeated, so I capitulated. Very sad. Travel Guard is the worst.

You say that travel cards don't offer enough benefits but are you aware of the Chase Sapphire Preferred Credit Card travel benefits? Delayed baggage ($100 per day up to 5 days), lost luggage ($3, 000), Emergency Evacuation ($100, 000), Travel Accident ($100k to $1M), trip delay reimbursement ($500), Trip cancellation/interruption ($20, 000), Emergency Medical and Dental ($2500) and Medical and Legal referral assistance. The medical might be a bit on the low side depending on the country but that is the only benefit I beef up with extra coverage. It's pretty comprehensive.

I filed a claim with Princess Travel Insurance, which is AON, six months ago, and am still waiting for payment. The claim was for $379.00. I am preparing to just eat it. I give up on them.

I got delayed at LAX. It took TravelEx 6 months to reimburse me, unbelievable. They tried every trick in the book not to pay the claim. The claim was less than $1000.00.

I found a plan through John Hancock that let me purchase just enough for my initial trip deposits and I can add the full covered amount as I purchase other trip components. This was essential to me since I’m putting a long trip together 14 months in advance that has two cruises. I needed to buy within two weeks for the preexisting condition waiver. I didn’t want to buy a plan for the entire amount that far ahead, it would be a lot of money up front. I was happy to find one that allows that!

Big tip on travel insurance. Do not use Safety Wing! They do not pay out claims and once they have your money they don't want to know you!
