Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky was born to a poor family in the Crimea in 1817. His early seascapes and landscapes earned him entry to the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts where he graduated with the gold medal. He returned to the Crimea and painted many of the numerous seascapes for which he is famous, then traveled through Europe. He went to Istanbul eight times between 1845 and 1890, and a number of his paintings are on display in the Ottoman Imperial Palace. He died in 1890, at the age of 72. Because of his long and active painting life, he became the most prolific Russian painter of his times, leaving over 6,000 works. A pair of his works have recently been auctioned for $3,200,000 and £2,710,000. He is also perhaps the most forged of all Russian painters. Music is Stephan Carroll's haunting "Moonlight at Sea."

Beautiful, passionate and consummate artist!

Striking similarities to the work of WJM Turner, whose lifelong passion was also devoted to revealing the light.

Armenian... or Turkish... or Polish... or someone else. He is a Great Painter of Old Russian School, he was born in Old Great Russia. And please! do not touch your nationalistic hands the memories about great people of great country, which was a home for russians, ukrainians, armenians, germans. And all these people represented themselves as Russians. And they were proud of it!. Now, you have Cher and Kardashian. They are real Armenians!

@DmitryAKo Listen I am saying that Hovhannes Aivazian was Armenian from Russia, he recognized himself as an Armenian and has Armenian signatures under couple of his works. His brother was an Armenian Priest and spoke only Armenian.
