Dr. Alan Shelby, Dean of Living Faith Bible Institute joins us on Ep. 162 of @thepostscriptshow to discuss the ancient history of Dispensationalism. He explains that it is both doctrinal and practically necessary for the Bible student to yield to II Timothy 2:15, rightly dividing the word of truth. Many have set forth to interpret the Bible with incorrect divisions resulting in the many heretical emergent forms of Christianity which we see today.

The Greek word used here is “ὀρθοτομοῦντα” and lexicons generally don’t interpret the word to be literally cutting or dividing but in a figurative sense. In particular the “strongs exhausted concordance” says: “From a compound of orthos and the base of tomoteros, to make a straight cut, i.e. (figuratively) to dissect (expound) correctly (the divine message) -- rightly divide.” It may be a stretch to say that Paul was talking particularly about dividing the bible into dispensations.

I’m my opinion (as much as that matters) and a few scholars that I have listened to agree on is the one way to understand the bible is to read it in it’s context. The biblical context, the cultural context, the audience, the author, all of these things are crucial to understanding how and why was the books written and not only that each book is unique in its writing styles and it’s important to note that because some books are not to be read like a science textbook

Does it now? Then explain to me how you get a rapture in 4:1 when clearly Christ doesn't meet John in the air and the multitude no man can number is in 7:9.
