@8:17 in the video. To answer your question, Ryan. The location allows the greatest line of sight communication without mountains obstructing the signal.

I’ve had the honor to serve with some Australians. Most laid back yet lethal soldiers I’ve encountered. They do some crazy as hell things but they’re awesome.

Deep ties between the USA and Australia. The 1st Marine Division of the USMC has “Waltzing Matilda” as its official marching song in honor of the time the division spent Down Under during WW2

Yes...100 percent...there would absolutely be some UK personnel stationed at Pine Gap, as well as Canadians and New Zealanders. 💯

In 1994 I was shown a photo from a since decommissioned satellite. It showed a person driving down the road in the US in a convertible Ford Mustang. On the dashboard was a pack Marlboro cigarettes. I know they were Marlboro because I could read the letters on the package. Further, in 1986, during the start of the Chernobyl disaster the Russian ambassador to the US found out about it because the US showed him satellite photos of the plant just a few minutes (about 90) after the meltdown. He left the party he was attending to contact Moscow. So yeah they are that good. Keep in mind these examples are DECADES old. Algorithms and optics have only gotten better. The US funds scientific endeavors like Hubble and JWST that look up because the same tech has the ability to look down too. LOL

The degrees they mentioned are because if the mountains or surface of the geography were any higher and the certain signals would be blocked both to and from the station, my best guess

US can't operate as an armed force domestically in Australia. Any response to incursion or threat to the base would be by Australian authorities only.

The British had/have a joint military rocket and weapons testing range about 600 or 700 kilometres south-east of Pine Gap...also the British detonated a few nuclear bombs a few hundred kilometres south-west of Pine Gap as well.

As far as the degree of terrain, put your arm straight out in front of you. Consider this 0° and straight up would be 90°. The perfect line of site (LOS) is 0° as there is no terrain between the satellite and the dish and anything greater than a 6° terrain would reduce the line of site function of the satellites they want to communicate with.

There are two other "Pine Gap" type stations in the world. One in Colorado and one in the UK. There's a station north west of Misawa Airbase in Japan that ive never heard anyone talk about although it doesn't appear to be active anymore, maybe an old piece of the same apparatus that was cut away and closed at some point.

Fun fact for those out there that like to win free food and drinks from trivia questions. While it said 2nd largest desert of INHABITED continents, the largest desert in the world is Antarctica which wouldn’t be on that list because while it has a few hundred scientists at any given time, it doesn’t have any permanent residents.

Many of you probably know this. Some won’t. And it’s not at all important. However, If typing this means that anyone reading might ever win a free beer then it has been more than worth it.

Plus, this poop is taking forever and my legs have been asleep for at least 10 minutes now, so I’ve literally got nothing else to other than continue to waste everyone’s time by needlessly extending this already overly extended pointless comment.

Ok. Now I’m done.

SHIT! I’M OUT OF TOILET PAPER!!!!

idk if you saw the recent video come out of australia with some of their politicians (i cant remember who it was) where an elected politician was asking a foreign affairs person if the US is staging nukes in australia. Her response was "our policy is that we don't ask and they don't tell".

I was recently reading a rechnical manual on a satelite that is no longer in use (we have better ones now) that could read the words on a newspaper someone was reading. I can not even imagine how amazing they must be now.

Excellent video! Ryan watching from Florida and I love your channel, , That was a very interesting video, , well it's no secret Base anymore, , 😂 But being an American it doesn't surprise me, We could have stuff that would blow our minds and only very few would know about it, , That's why I love my country so much, we always find ways to keep us all safe with the help of our friends, and amazing technology, ,🇺🇸🇦🇺🇬🇧

The part you asked about, basically it says that part of Australia is bloody flat. There's no mountains or big hills, a d the angle of what terrain features there are doesn't exceed 6 degrees. This essentially gives the base a ginormous line of sight into space to see satellites way the heck out there at the horizon
