The thing that actually worries me the most about completely unmanned equipment on the battlefield is the fact that they cannot be allowed to fall into enemy hands.

Soldiers in the field can go through SERE training to provide them some resistance to interrogation, and there is an expectation that captured soldiers will be treated humanely.

A drone, on the other hand, is fair game to be torn apart and reverse-engineered. Unmanned units in the field will either have to have a very thorough self-destruct function that prevents them from being recovered by anyone or a physical, human team in the field for the express purpose of destroying disabled drones that can’t be saved.

I’ll put $10 down that anyone who touches the robo-dog without disabling the defense mechanism first gets a nice shock from a capacitor bank discharging along the surface plates

4:02 i play around with 3d printers, pcb fabrication and robotics. The price range listed for the military version of Boston Dynamics "Spot" and the orginal are 90%+ research and development costs. Similar to all military projects. The majority of the cost was the development of high torque zero backlash brushless motors. The price a decade ago for a high gear ratio high torque motor wasn't even on the market. You can get the same motors that are on that dog robot for under $1k each and as cheap as $10 for chinese clones that are actually comparable but with zero quality control. These motors are stepper motors and they are incredible, they are usually flattened, they are meant to replace servos but ended up being one of the most important disruptive tech for engineering. The high torque allows the robot to lift, move, carry heavy objects, the opposite of the stepper would be a high rpm longer and thinner motor used in flying drones. The difference is the distance between the positive and negative polarity. The closer the magnets the higher the rpm, the further the higher the torque.

The Boston Dynamics "dog robot" now has a "head/fifth arm" that moves/bends in all directions; it can grab stuff, toss stuff, etc.

I remember seeing a documentary where a woman was in charge of the development of logic flow for an automated car...
She directly stated on camera that she had.. on her own authority.. chosen to program the vehicle.. that if a crash was inevitable and multiple persons were in the way.. ie a man walking along.. a woman with a pram... etc etc.. that it would automatically run over the man every time...

Agreed. Keep the human in control, and the distrust of AI is well founded. I wonder how well shielded these are from EMP and computer hacking/electronic warfare?

Having robotic assistance is a awesome thing. Replacing the majority of troops for robotic systems is not good. It will only make war easier for politician's to decide. This is truly a scary thing.

Skynet should have a permanent particle that is not deletable. Which allows us to give it commands no matter what the situation. If it is unsure of a Target it should send us the best data it can on it.

The test and build cycles on weapons span decades. The F-22 program was started in 1978 so the technology we test and field is 40 to 50 years old by the time it enters full time war capabilities and production.

What Id like to know/ hear is you talk about the why... what technical & tactical advantages do you think they'd provide in the field for you and your team.

Two adversaries not at war but tensions high, one side finds a reconnaissance vehicle not where it should be looking like it's testing strong and soft points, if that vehicle is known to not have any people inside that could be killed ratcheting up the emotions even more (they could just be lost), deciding only hardware destroyed it could cause firing on it much easier to make, could be both good or bad depending on the circumstances.

As a general rule: if the information is public knowledge then the military already has the next generation in use and is already developing the generation following that one.

I think the Robo-Doggo likely has a taser or OC spray built in. Due to the fact that it can communicate, I doubt the sound will be it.

Should do the Boston Dynamic one. Those demos are crazy.

I remember seeing an interview with the guys who wrote the 2009 Terminator movie and they talked about getting to have a meeting with some people from DARPA. They said they asked DARPA if their ideas were possible and the response was, "We have people working on that.". Vague, I know, but food for thought. Also, i would like to see the results of an exercise where the K9 robots are sent to hide in an area. How hard would they be to find?

Your distrust of technological "solutions" which replace humans is spot on.

Remote controlled aircraft have been around since WW2. Regarding "Tempest", the odds are it has been in operation for years.

Edit: There are plenty of science fiction portrayals - especially the Terminator films - which explore the potential consequences of creating an artificial intelligence which is programmed to kill people.

Looks to me like the Terminator was a documentary
