As a retired NCO with multiple deployments, my "military" closet is still filled with all sorts of pieces of kit. Nearly all of it was bought for comfort, with only a few for better function. Or canteens, since I have seen the issued ones used for some pretty nasty things. The issued items all did the job and generally did it pretty well, they just were not the most comfortable or well fitted. The most common thing is boots, with them covering the full range of arctic to desert across at least three colors (black, tan, coyote).

Also it is not "stealing", it is "acquiring".

If the guy in charge of your section is not good at procuring equipment from the depot's, it means either. He sucks at his job for your logistics chain sucks. Which then means instead of buying your own gear. You could make friends with other divisions. Like. Say the Air Force and navy and the motor pool. And procure equipment from them if your own supply chains are terrible. In the u s, if we have any kind of logistics shortball in any group, it's not too hard to barter for some gear from another. That's further back in the lines if thers a shortage.
If they rotate you to a section that's a little bit further back from the front line, it never hurts to volunteer your guys to help out another section that's permanently stationed there and exchange for kit that you don't have. People are more than willing to exchange something. They don't really need at that moment in time and can wait for a replacement if you're willing to help them out of doing something they don't want to do.

Decades ago, one rarely saw cheap toys, clothes, etc. with either "Made in the USSR" or "Made in China." The democracies prospered just fine without them. China was let into our markets, but with a little readjustment period, we can cut them out again.

From my experience the best way to deal with a bully is to stand up for yourself and if you have friends to help you so much the better.

Congratulations Ryan and good luck on your upcoming fight. Same as the others. Never had any issue with my equipment in my 10 years of service. The closest I came was a private was pissed off at the guys in front of me because they were calling them POG’s. So he was resistant on issuing me two pairs of the same size boots claiming they only had the one pair left. After I talked to him politely and treated him like a human being. He apologized and got them for me.

I got out the army in 90, everywhere we went I bought extra kit, it was the norm for us. You guys got Norwegian shirts we had to buy em. I doubt the forces have ever supplied the correct kit for the job.
Nice one.

I've seen footage of Russian soldiers unwrapping packaged explosives only to find blocks of wood inside. Another soldier proved his helmet was crap by punching a hole in it. I've also seen "bulletproof" vests consisting of a vest stuffed with corrugated cardboard.
All the better for a Ukrainian victory in my mind. 🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦

It’s not fake equipment. It’s proper equipment - for stuff like paintball and so on.

Regarding reactive tank armor, I get the impression the tanks in question once had reactive armor. While in storage the explosives were sold off and all we're seeing is the cardboard and rubber packing materials.

I had ZERO issues with the equipment given to me in my 20 years of service. I never had to buy anything but boots because of wear and tear. Even while deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, NO, it’s not normal to have to buy your gear for combat. I guess Britain has no reliable supply chains.

To be honest, . no Russian soldier caught by a machine gun burst while wearing a plastic armor vest has yet complained after being killed.

I was a sensor operator on the Ac-130u model gunship and deployed to Iraq multiple times. I believe we should confront tyranny abroad. Also enjoyed access to the best kit available.

Last thing: corruption! The military contractors were riddled with corruption kickbacks, etc. Nobody really knew the extent of the corruption. The kit was fake, defective, or non-existent at all. Russia's adequate military stockpiles were pretty much shit to start with. It's amazing that they got as far as they did. That's where Wagner comes in..

Putin's psychology: first, he has never spent a day in the military in his life, but he thinks he knows more than his generals (who there is going to tell him he's wrong, unless they want to drink radioactive tea?)
Second, he's a sociopath and a narcissist. That means he thinks he's smarter than anyone else, and he has no real empathy. He was talking with one mother of a dead soldier, and told her he would probably have drunk himself to death if he hadn't died in Ukraine anyway, and at least the way he'd died had been doing something useful. Not the portrait of compassion.

When I was in the US Army (Certain the same for other branches) we got a "clothing allowance" to offset the cost of replacing gear.

Sanction question: Russia broke International law and the UN Charter. Sanctions had to be an answer for that.
