Female Guinea Fowl Mating Call

Female guineas will make a two syllable call that sounds like they're saying "Buckwheat". It's them calling for a mate. Guinea fowl are typically sexed by their calls, since oftentimes their physical characteristics aren't distinct enough between male and female.

I just wanted to say thank you for this video. It might not really mean anything to other people, but the sound of the Guinea Fowl, or as we call them in Afrikaans - "Tarentaal, " has a very special place in my childhood. I used to visit my grandparents who lived very close to a nature reserve. It was always so quiet there, with no vehicle or city noises, and the wind blowing through the pine trees, making their distinct whistling noise. At dawn, I would stand outside, looking at the mountains and listening to the calls of the Guinea fowls in the distance, echoing across the land. This sound brings back so many childhood memories and gives me a sense of euphoria, almost like everything will be okay again, just like it was back then when I didn't have a worry in the world.
