Watching you cut the starters to expose more of the tar line, I do that too! Also I was taught decades ago to save the grit in the bundles to mix with tar or silicone to cover the last nails on the cap or any exposed nails in the field!

When I started shingling in 91, three tabs were the thing, we snapped 5 inch lines all the way up the roof. Perfect every time

With Certainteed Landmarks and the Certainteed swiftstart starters they are the same length which is nice

4 nails is enough. Wasting 25% with 5. And no shiners. Reloading less often
I put the factory end on the right rake. Nail it and make the cut on the inside end.
Make all my cuts with an old pair of large tin snips. Try it you might like it
