Gnome 3 Review | LAS | s16e05

Perched on our front porch and ready to spring into ACTION, we review Gnome 3! Are the punk kids making a mess of our lawn, or is this the future of desktop Linux?

@uncut02 It's an issue related to the length of LAS, and the video bits hitting the disk after the audio bits do the longer the recorder is under load. But I came up with a solution for our new show TechSNAP that seems to have fixed it. Going to try it for next LAS.

We use Final Cut Pro, and sometimes Adobe Premiere.

Am pretty much going to stick with Maverick until next October. I might do some experimenting on a new rig that am getting soon but my productivity rig will stay on Gnome 2.32.0 for a while now.

about the Gnome review, I would also make a case for Jolicloud, and all the 'netbook' interfaces like Moblin, Maemo/Meebo, KDE Plasma and the Sugar from the XO.

@dusthillguy I think I'll have to give XFCE a try - I've been using KDE for about a day now and I'm not thrilled with that either.

i actually like gnome 3 overall, i agree in that those widgets in the top panel could be brought back...miss them a bit...but it is not too bad. but i agree with Chris: that this is most probably the baseline, and from here the Gnome team will build up the new Shell.

I have been a windows user for a long long time ..time to time i did try to switch over to linux. I remember using redhat but it was early 2000s, i could not stand it every thing was a damn challenge so i moved back to windows. when i heard about ubuntu i again tried to move to linux but again it was a fail casue of the lack of drivers etc.. 2012 i saw gnome 3 and it was exactly what i have been looking for..multitasking made super easy and FREE no need for new hardware..so far i love it..

@jupiterbroadcasting what linux distros do you use, and what is your prefered desktop enviroment? what improvements would you like to see added to Gnome 3? what are the major points, someone should consider, moving from windows to linux? I am still trying to decide on what distro and desktop enviroment to go for on a desktop pc. One that would also suit installing to a pen drive, for my laptop as a secondary os. Used linux on and off for the last couple of years, always use open source if I can.

Why is it that every LAS Video is out of Sync for me? :( Thats sooo sad!
BTW Chris, what editing program do you use?
I like the gnome 3 look. Im not sure if i like the user experience yet.

Have you tried XFCE? The latest version works just as well as GNOME2, except it uses a lot less memory and sucks a lot less.

Im with Bryan. I don't wanna use Unity OR Gnome 3. But since i have my ubuntu website and youtube channel, ill have to pick one of them to do svreencasts on. Regular gnome videos would be boring.

@dusthillguy The only time I have used XFCE, was when I was trying out DreamLinux. It is worth checking out as an alternate enviroment, especially if you need to free up resources.

@Rokalacs Linus Torvalds the CREATOR of Linux says Gnome 3 is an "Unholy mess.", and ask the people at GNOME to keep making GNOME2 . He also said Unity was buggy .

I started watching this about 2 months ago and now its part of my weekly routine.

I refuse to use Ubuntu anymore because of their switch to the Unity interface. I have actually been scrambling for the past 2 or 3 months trying to find a suitable replacement for Ubuntu and have decided on Debian and Fedora (don't judge). I was using OpenSUSE 11.3 but 11.4 was way too unstable on my 2 laptops.

Times are a changin.

Is the audio out of sync for anyone else? At around 41-42 min it seems to go out of sync

kde 4 does allow quick additional desktops just not as swiftly as gnome 3
