Possibly another option people may wish to consider is the new Manjaro 19 Gnome. It includes a Desktop Layout Switcher which allows you to have a number of 'other' desktop appearance 'looks'. Manjaro Gnome along with Ubuntu Gnome and Solus Gnome were always more friendly options to 'vanilla' Gnome, but the new Desktop Layout Switcher has made Manjaro Gnome even better... in my opinion of course :)

I'm afraid Pantheon is largely different from GNOME Shell. Yes the apps are GTK 3 based (plus their own library called Granite) and yes the Gala WM is based on libmutter. That's about it, though. G Shell is written using web languages and uses a clutter based toolkit called St. Pantheon is GTK and Vala. G Shell is a single process and the interface is all rendered in one scene. That's why the whole the desktop is prone to crashing. The Pantheon components (panel, dock etc) are individual processes and even separate projects. Very different approaches and code under the hood. In terms of user experience, they definitely share a lot in common and I can see how you came to that conclusion. Finally, Cinnamon is a lot closer to G Shell in terms of code. Mint actually forked GNOME 3 and reshaped the experience into what you see today. XD
