My Dad who was a Master Mechanic told me to remove the plugs, add oil into each cyclinder then use a socket wrench to crank the engine.Do a full rotation slowly adding a litte more oil each time. Then let it sit overnight. You can drain the oil and a the other good stuff to get it ready for cranking it over in the morning. The point he told me was that to many people rush it, gotta let the oil do it's job and slowly move down the cyclinder walls etc. and this little bit of patience can add tens of thousands of miles to the the life of the engine because it did not suffer any trauma when it was first started, such as scratched cyclinder walls.

Step 1: drain all old oil and replace the filter. Also empty old, varnished gas from gas tank. Step 2: Add some Marvel Mystery oil to each cylinder and the oil filter and let it sit overnight. Step 3: replace battery, plugs, wires, and points/distributor if necessary. Make sure starter is working. Step 4: Add more marvel mystery oil as well as a high zinc break in oil to the engine. Step 5: Add a little fresh gas to the carb if it is carb'd. Replace fuel lines if necessary. Step 6: Turn the key and pray. This process worked wonders on many a seized 1960s V8 in my time. Once you get er' running, you can flush the old nasty coolant, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, and brake fluid out, because those will need to be changed too.

When my dad bought my 1996 Ford Mustang in June of 2015 it sat for 8 years in 2007. The year I graduated from high school. Now it rides smoothly down the highway.

yes, you have to drop the tank, but before you do, drain the tank, put 5 gallons of gas in, one gallon of lacquer thinner. Then try to get it running to clean the crud out. The fuel system will be full of it. good luck

shouldn't you change the old oil before you try to start it?

scotty I love your videos because you simplify things that others complicate and your videos are very thorough too.

if you flooded it out, remove the spark plugs, crank the engine over to clear it out, then put the spark plugs back in after you dry them out.

+Scotty Kilmer My Honda motorycle was outside (with a cover) 3 years. People told me I should take it to a mechanic to take care. I just did what you said, emptied fuel, added new, and I just got back from a ride. Of course I'm gonna change oil, battery and stuff, but wanted to share because I'm so happy, you saved me some money Scotty, thanks a lot man!

@Hammer0165 yes, fill it up to the top if you don't empty it out, and refill it again when half empty to dilute the old gas.

@Reddogmr57 Injectors certainly have problems, that's why you NEVER let fuel injected cars sit long. The old vette I fixed had a carb, and I ended up throwing it away and putting a brand new edelbrock on it to make it run good. But, you want a trick, put a gallon of lacquer thinner in the gas tank and try running the engine at 2500 rpms for an hour, that may clean em out.

Love your videos Scotty! I'm in Scotland and I watch your videos every night! I was a mechanic 25 years ago and I miss it. I wish your videos were around when I was younger, they would have been a great help. What your doing is fantastic especially for the younger guys who need tips when working on cars. Keep up the good work we really appreciate the effort you put in. Cheers!!!

I just love how professional these videos are. Everything is done properly, without forgetting key important measures (which many other channels do).

75 Vega I bought for $50 from a guy who had it sitting in a barn for years. Said he never could get it to start, replaced several parts and the universal fuel pump. I towed it home, hand fed gas and it fired. Crawled under the car, turned his new fuel pump around(the right direction). And drove it for 10 years without a problem. Only put $ in it when I wanted to. Amazing what can happen when fuel is feeding the carb, instead of blowing air into the fuel tank! TRUE STORY

@jensen1971x Yes, certainly, but if one doesn't even know it anything works, it's best to try starting first. I changed the oil in it once it started.
