Xbox Series X Teardown: Totally Modular, Not As Repairable

It’s been seven years since the Xbox One's release, and now we have the all-new Xbox Series X—not to be confused with 2017’s Xbox One X. Or was it the Xbox One Series X? Even Microsoft can't keep track sometimes. Naming scheme aside, this Xbox is all-new, with what Microsoft calls a “sleek monolithic” design. This Tower of Terror prioritizes cooling, and it’ll need it to render games in 4K at 120 fps. We’re curious whether this design for increased cooling comes at the expense of modularity or repairability, but that’s what we’re here to find out. Let’s tear it down!

It amazes me that something like this costs only $500 while an iPhone can cost over $1k

There is something elegant about the design of the Xbox Series X. Down' to how they manage cables. It's all very intentional with zero wasted space.

Master Chief, what are you doing inside the Xbox Series X

Sir, Cooling

To be fair, most likely the disc drive being locked to the console is a measure to prevent piracy using a modded disc drive. I'm sure this will be defeated, though.

I'm way more impressed by the internal design, it's a beauty!

I wasn't sure about the Series X when it was first announced. But it grew on me. After finally getting my hands on one I can say I really think it's one of, if not THE, sexiest piece of tech Microsoft has ever produced. Inside and out. Any engineer who worked on that design will have some seriously kickass resume material.

A really good video! Weird question: Could you make measurements of the plastic thickness? I'm trying to fit a PC inside the Xbox Series X dimensions

Any chance we get a detailed teardown including info about what each specific piece is? With model information and what not? IE, Wifi board, ethernet controller, etc...

The internals remind me of the GameCube

How do you guys feel about running a small fan behind the xbox near the hdmi/power/ethernet? I do it and can tell it keeps my xbox fresher. Huge difference from the heat it blows without it.

How hard would it be to get the the 1TB SSD, and how hard would it be to format it?

What chips are they using for their hdmi signal?
Are the EFI filters the same as the one x?
How are the hdmi ports designed?

you don't need to manually partition SSD drive because OSU1 image restoring procedure already got this functional

Would replacing the bluray drive, actually do anything goof for the actual unit itself?

Nice teardown - though if you docked this down to a 7 for software locks, why did you give Apple's iPhone 12 series a 6 when EVERYTHING (display, battery, face ID, cameras etc) is software locked?
