Can you reshape an object like straight lines into bends

So...only one...why is it that every STL I import in an attempt to make a hole in it, it doesn't work or even worse it joins the cylinder used to cut the hole and the object? Maybe a better question is what properties must the STL object have for manipulation such as cutting a hole and how do you set them? I've tried 3 different STL files, always the same result when following the directions of cutting a hole. Either nothing happens to the object I wanted a hole in, or occasionally it joins the two objects instead of being subtractive as the Boolean is set up to do.

I wish Blender tutorials for beginners didn't use hot keys for everything. I already have enough trouble remembering all the Fusion hotkeys. And if I knew the menu locations, I would also be to intuit where other related things where. Well I would hope at least.

Lol and where are the dimensions... ok if your making shapes but not actual dimensional parts. Blender really is a toy.
