Maxim Vengerov plays Bruch Violin Concerto No. 1 (2021)

Bruch Violin Concerto with Pablo Heras-Casado and Philharmonique de Radio France in December 2021.

The first time I played this piece, I was 12 years old. 6 years later, I made a recording with the Gewandhaus Orchestra with Maestro Kurt Masur conducting. At the age of 21, I decided I played this piece too much and left it for 24 years.

Now I'm very much in love with this piece again. I hope you will hear my love for the composer that wrote so marvellously for violin. One could call this concerto an ideal for the violin!

Saw Maxim as a young man, he was at Tower Records in SF promoting his first album. He played Paganini and it was so impressive. As a younger classical music fan at that time I purchased the album and he signed it for me! I still have it!

The first time I heard this concert I was around 15 years old, in the 60's. A Heifetz recording. I was very emotional and cried. Today I understand that this concerto is not just another concerto for violin and orchestra, but perhaps the most impressive concerto ever written for violin. Not only the lay public loves this concert but musicians and violinists too. There are many videos on youtube of this concert. Vengerov gives us a vigorous, manly interpretation without neglecting the sweetness of this concert. Magnificent!

Not sure if I’d ever have chance to hear Maxim playing this (or anything) in person. I started to love his music since the 90s when I was in high school and heard him playing various repertoire over and over and always amazed and loved his energy and virtuoso so much. And this concert makes me remember how much I love Bruch and Maxim! Bravo!! 🎉

Although I have been playing for 6 years I’ve only had consistent lessons and played consistently since fall 2023 and this piece has recently been one of my favorites to listen to. Now as im heading off to college in the fall, I started to learn this piece (just mvt 1) and fell in love with it even more. Its tender crisp sound paired with its passionate aggressive style of playing done by the composer lets me play with full intensity and heart like no other concerto with such a vast array of emotions conveyed. One of the best concertros for sure
