Spinning and drafting fine yarn, up close

I'm spinning a 3 ply lace weight yarn, and thought it might be helpful to show the fibers up close as they are spun into an extra fine single.

You can see the scale of the single in relation to a quarter at the end of the video.

Finally! You'd think that it's impossible to spin fine yarns by hand from the lack of material out there

Thank you. There's still nothing as close-up as your footage. I see I still have a little way to go, my finest is still more like embroidery floss than sewing thread. I learned to spin 20+ years ago, before social media existed, from books and magazines at our local library and on a wheel I found broken at the tip. I had 17 micron merino in my paddock, so that is what I started with - years later I was told I started with the most difficult fibre 😆After a couple of hours I had something that could be knitted, so I've never bothered with 'rules' and terminology. I have no idea what anyone would call my drafting practice - forward or backward, long or it all depends on the fibre type, strength and length - I handle it the way it wants to be handled. I'll be working my way through your material, looking for more gems like this one

Really helpful closeup of the drafting - it really shows how you should keep introducing new fibres as you go. Margaret Stove describes this with drawings but your video shows this beautifully clearly. Thank you!

This is exactly how I spin. Not just my lace weight. there is SO much control.

Thanks a lot for sharing. This is exactly what we often miss in demonstrations - the close up!

Wow!  Thank you for posting that.  I've been wanting to spin lace weight yarn, but haven't been spinning long enough to be able to spin yarn quite so fine.  I'm going to keep at it, though.

That helped me SO much, thank you for the clear closeup shots @xandy - this definitely stands up well for a 7 year old video

That’s amazing! The thinnest I can get is fingering or sport weight yarn.

Thank you for this upload. I'm new to spinning and have just bought a vintage double drive wheel, which I believe is perfect for fine yarn. cant wait to get started. Sure hope I'll be able to spin that well.

my favorite thing to spin right now is super short 'organic cotton stuffing' i ordered on amathon to see if my homemade frankenbike spinning wheel would work... i make little punis with some paddleboards i had and just spin and lose track of time.

It sounds like you are treadling really fast. How much twist does fine yarn like that need to stay strong? Also are you spinning from the fold? Great video!

😯Great video - I want to do this! I'm just a beginner and I use a drop spindle and park and draft method. Do you use drop spindle at all? If so, could you give a demo for lace weight? Also, what type of fiber is that and what's the staple length?

How do you 2 ply such thin yarn? Thank you for the demonstration in fact one plying this thin yarn would be wonderful.

lovely hands. Calming to watch you spin. So elastic! Did you ever spin silk?

Thank you so much for your video. Can you, please, describe how you arrange the wheel ( speed, ratio, take-up..) and which type of the wheel you have used ( SD or DD)?

What type of fiber are you using in this demo?  How is your wheel set up for spinning fine yarn?

I'm curious - does the yarn you end up with tend to be dense or more on the woolen/"bouncy" side? I have a hard time spinning thin and not spinning a very dense, worsted style yarn. Once plied it can be a little too heavy for my projects. It seems like since you aren't smoothing it down too much it probably helps make it loftier, but I'm just curious if you could give a description or if you've ever weighed it using a yarn balance to get grist?
