In this episode of Urban Debate, anchor Shreya Dhoundial discusses how a grieving mother's letter to Ernst & Young India has sparked online outrage, highlighting the "toxic work culture" in offices, particularly at the "Big Four" accounting firms. Anita Augustine, mother of 26-year-old chartered accountant Anna Sebastian Perayil from Kochi, blamed the "excessive workload" at Ernst & Young for her daughter's death. Anna had joined the firm in Pune in March, and her health rapidly declined due to the overwhelming pressure, Augustine wrote in a now-viral letter addressed to EY India head Rajiv Memani.
A panel of experts has joined Shreya Dhoundial to discuss this in detail. Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi says “Mental Health is an important issue, and corporates should take the onus for it..” Psychotherapist Harleen Bagga says “We are focusing on what the stakeholders want and not the culture invoked..” Watch the full video to know more and follow Mirror Now for the latest updates.

My wife used to work in EY as a CA.Despite having Stone pain she was not allowed to leave office and was forced to work.
EY is pathetic company.

Myself being a CA, my first Manager gave me a motivational speech with an example of a colleague who managed to work on a monthend despite the fact she lost her father the very same day. And she explained that’s what commitment means, and that made me realise it’s not a place for me..

Did someone remember who suggested Indians to work for 17hrs a day just because he built his IT empire in India and earned millions? Although the same company built ITR software it didn't pay income tax to government...😂

Murderers usually don't join the funeral events of their victims.

The toxic manager should be sacked first

I cannot even comprehend the fact that she worked herself to death for a company, that didn't even have the heart to pay their respects at her funeral. Sadistic, sick, and evil people are working in the name of corporate!

When Politicians told they will make India like Japan, I didn't expect this.

Deloitte should take this note seriously. Its hell in the name of hardwork. Managers and leads are expecting people to work like that only. Management should change to change this situation to employees

Toxic work culture is everywhere. Govt should consider strong labor law.

Resigned from a PSU bank due to long working hours …. Used to reach home by 9/10 pm on daily basis… With deteriorated physical and mental health, No time as a parent, No time for my share of family responsibilities…. Finally realised I’m paying a lot for the salary received…. HR never seemed to understand that there is a problem….. So resigned n saved my own soul….

The same thing is happening in Deloitte.Conducting meetings at the fag end of the day, when the employee has no strength to do any work and is fully drained.

As long as we have likes of Narayana Murthy as CEOS and leadership's, expectations to work 90 hrs a week, in the name of developing India..will sadly continue. We definitely need new laws

The country's service industry is going towards slavery - there is a disparity of pay - people work overtime for no incentive, one section does not work and others do their share of the labor, companies are saving money on oversees deputation but setting people up on night shifts - industrialists are making money and squandering money. There are more people less jobs - under such circumstances you can only imagine the pressure one takes.

A few months ago, Info Mur from Bangaluru urged techies to work 17 hours a day, sparking significant backlash on social media. Recently, he suggested that parents spend at least three hours a day with their children. Following his advice, techies would have just four hours left for sleep and household chores. It's surprising that such statements aren't more rigorously challenged, as they warrant serious scrutiny. How can he issue such statements? Shame indeed!!

Why is May 1st a holiday? To me, it marks the day in 1886, the workers movement demanded for the eight-hour workday. Since then that work culture has been widely adopted in many countries. Unfortunately, the eight-hour shift is rarely practised in our country. Nurses have gone on strike without success, railway loco pilots often face extended shifts that have led to accidents, and police officers rarely get an eight-hour schedule. These are just a few examples of the ongoing issues.

Anita`s attempt should at least question whether we celebrate May 1st anymore?.

I remember of working 15 hours in Cognizant. I don't take up any project which requires more than 9 hours of work. I still work from home so that i can be relaxed. I am recently changing my project because of toxic manager.
I have been there, i know what overwork and burn out feels like.
