Before you freak out, watch the video. These are my raw thoughts on some possible solutions to the liturgy issues in the Catholic Church. If you think I am dumb, you are probably right. But give it some thought. I think I may be on to something here :) What do you think? Let me know in the comments.

As a 20 year old that yearns to hear a TLM but it's too far to go to on Sunday, this is an awesome compromise!!! God bless!

Spot on, brother. All your points are great.

I’d like to add though that as a TLM-only Catholic that doesn’t ever judge those who prefer the N.O., I’ve experienced many, many attacks from N.O. people (who have laughed at me and taken great joy to see the crackdown on the TLM).

They’ve spiked the ball while delighting in our misfortune, and it’s not a good look. I grew up in the N.O., and still have an affinity for many of its aspects, but some of my brothers and sisters who hate the TLM need to do some soul searching.

Here's my compromise: Every Bishop should say the TLM exclusively. Every cathedral (central, and mostly within reach) should only say the TLM exclusively.

SHORT RESPONSE: To quote Fr. Blake Britton, “Don’t let satan take something beautiful and make it ambiguous.” Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water. Every licit celebration of the Eucharist is a gift greater than the cosmos, even when it isn’t celebrated to our personal taste. Take hope from those of us blessed with overflowing parishes and seminaries precisely because the Novus Ordo is celebrated with beauty and reverence here. And like St. Charles Borromeo after the Council of Trent, let us work for orthodox liturgical reform and implementation of Vatican II.

LONG RESPONSE: I encourage everyone (including Keith, my friend) to go back and watch the episode of Keith's podcast "The Convert's Guide to Vatican 2" with Fr. Blake Britton for a discussion of what the Second Vatican Council actually said, how it was hijacked by some, and what can be done to reclaim what it intended. Too often Vatican II and the Novus Ordo are villainized and rejected. Since Our Lord promised He would not leave us orphaned, do we really think He and His saintly vicars Paul VI, John Paul II, and the holy Benedict XVI (all who honored and celebrated the Novus Ordo with great joy and devotion) would have permitted the Novus Ordo if it were, at worst, a Masonic scheme to destroy the Church or, at best, a failed experiment in evangelization? The Novus Ordo of course needs continued reforms to bring it more in line with what Vatican II intended (same with the Extraordinary Form), but that is not a reason to discard it.

The “Mass of the Ages” documentary has some wonderful depictions of the beauty and the richness of the Extraordinary Form. As a liturgy/sacred music nerd, I applaud that. And yet, the documentary misrepresents the Ordinary Form and pulls quotes so out of context that it becomes deeply scandalous. Refuting everything would require another documentary series, so I’ll take only one example since they use it often to frame their argument.

Bugnini said “We must strip from our Catholic prayers and from the Catholic liturgy everything which can be the shadow of a stumbling block for our separated brethren that is for the Protestants.” Scandalous, right? Except, when did he say this and why? Bugnini wrote this in an March 1965 L'Osservatore Romano article referring not to the liturgy as a whole, but to two sentences in the Solemn Intercession for Church Unity on Good Friday, which calls non-Catholic Christians “heretics and schismatics” asking that God save “souls deceived and led astray by the devil”. Bugnini (no hero of mine, btw) is explaining why this single intercession needed revision. [Theological tangent: Part of Vatican II’s work on ecumenism was to assert that heretics and schismatics know and actively reject the truth, which can’t be said of most Protestants and Orthodox Christians today, since most have never known Catholic teaching in the first place. They are not heretics or schismatics; they are uncatechized, and that is /very/ different.]

Ecumenical Councils always take 50-100 years to settle, where things swing back and forth like a pendulum until balancing out. It can be rocky, so we need to stay faithful and obedient. But to ‘throw the baby out with the bath water’ is not in continuity with Tradition. Study what liturgical reforms were intended, both before and after the council (my favs are Tra Le Sollicitudini by Pius X, Mediator Dei by Pius XII, Vatican II’s Sacrosanctum Concilium, and the post-conciliar Musicam Sacram). And pray, pray, pray. We should ask the Holy Spirit to teach us to pray both forms of the Mass with reverence and devotion, even when things are not to our taste. Both forms are licit, and so both forms contain He who the entire universe cannot contain. I pray God would heal us from divisive tendencies, draw us to His Heart, and make us truly One.

The Sanctus and the Gloria should be sung in Latin at every mass in every place around the world, and the Kyrie should be in Greek. Nothing hits you in the heart like these three prayers traditionally arranged and sung in their traditional form.

I have played mass for over 16 years and would love to play for a Latin Mass. Being a liturgical minister, now with the Spanish community joining our little parish, a Latin Mass would bring us all together as a family. We all need to set at the Lord’s table together.

I'm a convert. In my church we use spme Latin two periods a year, Lent and Advent. We do the Kyrie, the Mystery of Faith, and the Agnus Dei in Latin, and it feels special. But here's tbe thing about Mass in English. If my mind wanders for a second once I snap to, I know where on the Mass I am. I suspect my mind might wander even more in a Mass that I can't understand. I could be wrong, but I suspect I'm right. And in English I find myself silently mouthing the Eucharistic Prayers aling with Father. Thhose prayers and the responses are the parts of Mass I most respond to. I would hate to lose that connection. And lastly I suppose, would Jesus have given the Sermon on the Mount in Latin, knowing that those listening spoke Aramaic? Was he trying to sound mysterious or somehow holy, or was he trying to express himself in words they would understand? There might be something about the Latin Mass that really touches some people, but there is something about "speaking in tongues" that touches some Protestants too. Many if us would just like to kisten and understand what we hear.

Perhaps some day you can explain why it is better to translate the TLM yo vernacular rather than the N.O. to Latin. I don't know enough about the TLM to know why you believe the liturgy is superior.

I agree! Great video, keep up the good work!

I’d love for it to just be the mass that Vatican 2 intended for it to be.

These are excellent options/suggestions. As a convert, I chose to attend the TLM for many reasons and am willing to travel or relocate to be able to attend it. Deo gratias.

I've seen this meme about "Things Vatican II Never Taught." Vatican II did not forbid ad orientem, nor did it prescribe anything like the abuses we often see these days. It did not encourage lessening of traditional music, Latin, or Gregorian chant. In fact, it affirms the value of Gregorian chant.
I agree with you that "the experiment has failed." This is coming from someone who has attended the TLM only twice in my life, and the first time was before I was Catholic. The Latin Mass is objectively better in every aspect, except maybe the cycle of readings.
P.S. I laughed at the description: "If you think I am dumb, you are probably right."

Fr Simon from Relevant Radio has talked about this, he has a great take on how to remedy the issues that were missed in the implementation of the V2 documents on the Mass.

You're not in no mans land brother, I am right here with you. I love the Latin Mass and attend, but also love my brother and sisters in Christ who attend any approved liturgy.

Our bishop did away with the TLM earlier this year. And prior to that he only allowed it once a month! TLM Catholics in the dioceses that have lost this would greatly appreciate your prayers!

I like them both and attend them both. There is a place for the Latin Mass and the Novus Ordo. Why should it be an either -or? Even in Novus Ordo Latin parts are sung and in the Latin Mass there are English parts.

Went to Latin mass for first time in decades two weeks ago. Beautiful. Spiritual. I don’t want to handle Eucharist again . I will continue to go to ordinary mass but it’s so beautiful to attend Latin mass. It’s a long distance for me to travel to Latin mass but I will go once a month . 🙏🏻

Agree with all your takes Keith. I’ve been taking the fam to TLM for 3 months now (NO our whole life). It’s deep waters for sure. I went to my first NO mass since we switched and I don’t think I can ever go back. Disney music sung by a princess on the altar doesn’t seem wise. Peace brother keep it up! JB

Yes! I agree!!! I live on the Oregon coast, if I had a traditional Latin Mass close by, I’d go in a heart beat, but the closest is over 2 hours away. 😔 I wish it were available at every parish, every priest should be trained. Well said!
