Australia here. Tent. With a stainless steel tub floor.

Tent. Every time. Ants, spiders, ticks, mosquitos, snakes, wind, rain, flash flooding, blackout for heat, gear protection, no need for trees like the hammock crowd... the list goes on. Worth the extra pound.

I just can't comprehend that there's places where a tarp is realistically viable. But then again I live in Florida. I basically need a tent just to walk to my car

I stealth camped in tarp shelters this whole entire year.had a blast doing it, and already put together a permanent winter shelter.each time I go out, I try to improve my spot!

Pair a tarp with a hammock and you have a god tier setup.

You rock. I'm the person that will sit outside as long as it's screened in and/or have bug spray. So I would want the tent all day. I'll bring a battery powered fan. Lol

In today's camping experience, tarps are for covering cooking/eating areas...NOT for sleeping.
The problems with ticks and lyme disease all too real for anyone to take those chances with sleeping under a tarp.
For the dreamers, survivalists, bug- outers who anticipate Armageddon...you can keep your fantasy tarp camping shelters.
For me and my family, it's a tent or cabin for sleeping, and a tarp to protect the cooking area.

2 x lyme disease = always with at least a mosquito net.

Summer or winter, definitely prefer the house. Spring and autumn, though, yea still prefer the house.

I chose the Ritz Carlton with room service! 😂

I take a tarp and a hopped bivi bag.

Gives you adaptability on the fly.

In a pinch I used a tarp and a wool blanket and literally folding the tarp in half and rolled up inside that.

Worked really well, not the most comfortable, but when you are that damn exhausted, you'll find you can sleep just about anywhere.

Here in Maine, mosquitos, black flies and deer ticks are a serious issue!

Both. bought a tent that I can set up with only the outer layer; basically, a tarp.
