Even if it were faster - and I agree, it's often not - this reminds me of something Paul Sellers said, which I often reflect on and think applies here. He said, "Why would I take a shortcut doing something I enjoy?"

Only time I've drilled mortise waste was while making my work bench simply because of the sheer amount of wood to remove.

"I enjoy using these tools " is an intelligent argument. "It's easier" is also an excellent argument, often people give up on projects not because they are too hard to do but because they are too hard to be enjoyable

It is easier when you do t have a mortising chisel. You take out most of the waste with the forstner bit and clean up the edges using g the back of the chisel.
When you have a mortising chisel absolutely do not drill out any of it.

The difficulty here is: you are misunderstanding how one would go about making a mortise after drilling it. you wouldn't use a mortise chisel to do so.
Losing vital material to support the mortis chisel is detrimental towards making the mortice a nice, clean joint.
If you use a drill to remove material prior to starting your chisel cuts, you want to use a bevel-edged chisel that is suitable for striking. This is because a bevel-edged chisel won't have it's own thickness getting in the way of removing material, and you are turning a job that would typically be chopping into a piece, into a job that is pairing and slicing small amounts from a hole that is mostly removed already.
You can also use a pairing chisel for this (for whatever reason you would want to), almost completely removing the need to use a mallet for the entire job whatsoever.

So although I agree completely with your points in this video and that it is better to just use the mortise chisel from start to finish, and get the job done with just a chisel and a mallet in a few minutes, it does suck that you miss interpret people's comments. and that people who comment these things don't give enough of a description to sound correct. Ultimately, it's down to choice and preferences. but they are both just as effective as each other, but only when done correctly and understood the process is different.

If you're gonna use a drill to bore out a mortise, do not use a mortise chisel. simple.

I like working with wood using hand tools, I may be lousy at it at times but that doesn’t stop the urge to create something with my hands using basic tools and techniques and I don’t particularly care what others might think about my abilities because it brings me joy and that’s reason enough.

I like to use a router and square the corners with chisels 😊
(Since I usually have to do dozens of mortises on a furniture piece)

It's all about the ratio preparation time vs total time. Hand tools are the best for small, one-off things. Power tools are better when you have to cut umpteen mortises. A factory is the best when you need to cut a gazillion mortises.
I personally never need more than a few :)

Manual hand drills are satisfying to use as well.

If you drill out mortise waste, using a bench chisel is a better choice to pare & clean the same.

Amen! I was teaching morticing today with my students and it's so much easier to learn with our drilling first. I only do our foot sash locks on doors, because it a oversized hole and doesn't need precision and I want the job done as it hurts my knees.

I feel like if you have the right tool for the job it’s gonna be fast and efficient and I like having the right tools. I really hate it when I don’t.

In my limited experience the ease of drilling out mortises is proportional to the size of the mortise. Fine small furniture, chisel all the way . Hogging out 12”x12”s for timber framing, drill first.

This is exactly how I feel about power tools vs. hand tools. power tools are great, but sometimes you just have to enjoy doing it by hand

Drilling when framing houses.😊🏘️ Does save time or when using inch chisel.😮

Having just used a mortise machine to do that very thing, i can appreciate the better quality joint you can get from hand tools. Machinery does not guarantee quality, nor is it always the most practical choice.

I took a lot of classes from Roy Underhill before the school closed. He said he tested both methods extensively and found that drilling the waste *is* faster but only by a little. I don't for small mortises, I'm like you, i like mortising with just a chisel and a mallet. Big mortises of like an inch, i use a bit and brace because i love useing auger bits. I love the weird crumbly twists of waste that come off the bit, i love the sound it makes as it bites into the wood.

It is actually easier but you have to drill with forstner bit as it is only bit that can overlap holes.

All pre-drilling does is make it more difficult IF you have real mortise chisels. BUT If all you have are bench or carpentry chisels it is a big help.

Your explanation is perfect but for a larger mortise I drill. It's not as bad with a larger chisel.

You could also get a mortise tool but then again you can make a picnic table style bench with deck screws and blocking 😅
