Lion and tiger are species of wild cats. They are the most famous for their body size: tiger is the largest, while lion is the second largest cat on the planet. Together with jaguar, leopard and snow leopard, they are classified as "big cats".

Actually, the determination of "king of beasts" is often variable depending on the culture. To modern Europeans, who had more contact with Africa and thus knowledge of African wildlife, they ended up adopting the Lion as a symbol of power because of the power and strength that went along with that imagery. However, not all European states did this. Norse and northeastern European countries for years saw the bear as the "King" because the Brown Bear was the largest predator they knew of. Some may have gained respect for the lion once they knew of it but that didn't entirely change their opinion. And in fact, there are a fair number of bears in Medieval heraldry as well as lions.

In Asia, however, where the lion's population was not as big and often didn't have as much success against the tiger in interspecies competition, particularly in the forested parts of India and southeast Asia, the tiger actually gained a fair amount of recognition for the title, particularly in India. This has largely continued today in the region, because while the Asiatic Lion has not gone extinct, it is limited to ONE park in western India while the tiger has recovered from the worst of the early 20th century hunts to hold a reasonably stable population in India and spreading across southeast Asia and reasonably rebounding population in the Russian Far East.
